What a compelling story and so reminisent of the times I've opened my door to a stranger at night with a problem. Getting gun is easy in Texas now. No need for training or a license. That sounds like the beginning of a long summer for police.

Thank you for the review and comments. It is alarming that it is so easy to get guns in Texas. I guess the isn't much in the way of background either. Not good news.

Great story, Beth. Yes, we all need to be aware that there are fraudulent people using fake stories to enter our homes. The right thing to do is to call 911 immediately if someone says they are in trouble. Don't open the door.
It happened to me one night, and it was someone who was on drugs. I closed the door and locked it, quickly.

Thank you for reviewing this one. This happened quite a while ago, but it could just as easily happen now. I thought reposting it might serve as a warning to those who might be taken in by a wonen in trouble.

This story is a relevant, if not more, today than it was ten years ago. It is very well written with just a couple of cues along the way (fright turning to anger, more than one person on the steps) as to how it will end. Women should arm themselves -- particularly older women. The elderly are frequently targeted by particularly violent criminals. Well done.

This story is excellent and very well written. I enjoyed the suspense throughout. You did a fine job of relaying the
events that took place that night and put the fear of God
in me.
Thankfully, it turned out all right, and she was safe from those
thieves in the night.
Great work and very enjoyable.

It is a scary world now. How sad. It was a wonderful world when I was growing up. Just wonderful. We could have slept on the front porch any night and know we were safe. We never locked the door. The keys were left in the car. What ever happened? Good Job, Beth. Your daughter was smart. Nancy:)

Thank you Nancy, It is good thing it was my youngest daughter instead of one of the others. Connie seemed to have a lot of common sense that helped her do the right thing.

Wow! What a scary story! Did this happen to Carol or Christi or Connie? She was very smart to not open the door because that line about needing help could get victims every time! It's very suspicious that she refused the help of the police. Thanks for sharing because it's a good warning!

Thank you for reviewing this. It was Connie. She lived with roommate for a while before she got married. The roommate was out of town. I think of all my children, Connie has the most common sense and street smarts. It was good that it was her rather than the other girls.

Whoa! I see it is based on a true story with your daughter. How scary is that? I am so glad that it ended well and not how it could have been. Very well written. Smiles, Carol

BethShelby,
Its a good thing that the girl who heard the knock was leery about opening her door. Your story had me fearful, but I had no control to continue reading your story, that put me in fear,
but so glad that I finished your story about your daughter.

This is an amazing story, Beth! You have raised your children well, and instilled in them a lot of common sense. Your family also has a reservoir of captivating stories to pull out, seemingly at a moment's notice. Life with the Shelbys is never dull!

I only found one error:

It was female voice causing Lisa's racing heart to slow down a bit.

It was a female voice causing Lisa's racing heart to slow down a bit.

This reminds me a bit of a time I was planning a walk with another female friend. We would be walking through an area without too many people, and I told her I would be taking some hairspray and a phone. Yes, those were our "weapons," like your daughter's cellphone and umbrella. Even while these items helped us feel a little more confident, we had to laugh at ourselves, a little bit... still, a little preparation is better than none.

Thank you for a great review and comments. Yes, we need some kind of protection. If aimed just right, hair spray might have bought your a second or two. I've heard hornet spay works, but who has that on hand?

You're very welcome, Beth. Actually I did see an off-Broadway play, sometime in the 80s, starring Susan Sarandon, called "Extremities." A young woman who is the victim of (attempted?) rape turns the tables on her attacker by blinding him with insect spray, and tying him up. With the help of her two roommates (who show up at some point) they torment him, until police arrive. It was rather terrifying! It wasn't the most enjoyable piece of entertainment I've attended, which I went to with an ex-boyfriend, but memorable nonetheless.
Hairspray can also be used to kill flying insects, when nothing else is available! Women have to be prepared to defend themselves against all kinds of threats, and hope it will never be anything more serious than a mosquito.
    Love and blessings, Mary Kay

Great story, Beth. It was girping from beginning to end. (I'm having a little fun at your expense because of the nit below):

Panic girpped her. [Panic GRIPPED her.] You've probably already had someone point it out to you.

That was the only thing I could find. This was a very well-written, suspenseful and well-paced story. It should do well in the competition.

Thank you Jay, I appreciate the review and comments. I did have it pointed out and I corrected it, but apparently when I first posted it about ten years ago, no one noticed it. FanStory people are getting smarter.
