I have a dog called Lucky so this title struck a chord. The colt does look beautiful and serene in the picture! I'm glad you lived to tell the tale. Imagine what could have happened if he had thrown you on the barb wire.

I don't think the work 'unpredictable'
I think this should read as WORD rather than "work".

held on like an embedded tick.
This is a brilliant vivid image.

"Whoa, boy! He probably had himself a horse laugh over that.
I'll bet he knew how frightened you were from the cold sweat you left on his body!

Thanks so much Helen. I can't believe that misspelling went so long without being caught but I'm glad you caught it. I really appreciate your review.

SUPERB.
Your account of your experience with the colt made hilarious and absorbing reading. I am so glad you are all in one piece, intact and ready to tell us this wonderful tale and write beautiful pieces later.
I liked the way you wrote about the unpredictable nature of the colt. An unpredictable colt and a greenhorn woman made a wonderful combination. When you passed under low hanging trees, did you consider the possibility of hanging on to the tree? A tree would be a safer bet than a runaway horse, am I right?
I am still laughing and ROFL.

Wow! Your generous rating makes my day. I'm so glad you enjoyed this story so much. No, it didn't even occur to me to raise my head. I was too scared to try a trick like grabbing a branch. The possibility of getting off that way didn't even occur to me. It sounds like a movie stunt. Thanks again for the six stars.

Oh my! What a ride. Glad you weren't hurt or worse! Bet those kids were pretty scared--wonder if any ride? I read this books as a city kid too and lost my interest when farmer friends of ours let me meet their horses. As I reached to pet the pony, the taller horse nipped me on the shoulder, "jealous" as they called it. That little lip and nip HURT! No more desire to ride, and a healthy respect for these beautiful beasts--let me assure you! Thanks for sharing this "tale"--S.

Thanks so much for the review and the great comments. Horses can be dangerous. My grandpa got a chunk taken out of his arm when he was carrying an armful of hay to feed his mule. The animal took a big bite of the hay and got some of his arm in the process. He was so mad if my grandmother had stopped he he would have grabbed a gun and shot the mule.

Wow! You are a brave one, Beth. I see by the experience on Lucky, you ever forgot the colt or the ride. LOL..Good idea to rid yourself of him. Probably too spirited for you. Great writing, Beth. Very well translated to the reader. Bob

I think I was more lucky than brave. I was scared to death. I still don't know how I managed to stay on his back. Thanks so much for reading and for the generous review.

Hi Beth. This piece is so well written! You've done a wonderful job with setting the scene for the episode of you finally riding Lucky. There were a number of well placed hints along the way of what was going to probably happen. So many great writes about horses on the site, makes me wish I'd had one. I truly enjoyed this lovely story. Warm regards...Bev

This tale is told well and with a great amount of honesty. Too many people end up doing the same thing and for exactly the same reasons. Too many young girls saw the movie, 'Black Beauty' or read the book, and marveled at 'My Friend, Flicka.' Did you ever notice how quickly those horses were able to be ridden? At least you knew a beautiful horse when you saw one - he was just too much for you. ~patty~

Great job on this story. I oould picture the scene with Luck. I did notice one small misspelling: "He proabably (probably) had himself a horse laugh over that." Keep up the excellent work.

Beth,
what a lovely non-fiction essay about your first horse named Lucky. Lovely photo you used. Your essay is superbly written with excellent anrrative and very good descriptive writing. I'd be scared riding a run away horse. I was enthralled by the action of you on top of Lucky. I could see the horse snickering at you as he tossed you on your butt.
Melissa.

THIS was my pony, Molly! I was ten and she knew I had no knowledge of how to ride and handle her!! GOD, and I got swiped under the apple trees all the time. You were brave to try, but any horse should be trained and really broke BY age 3. With lots of hours on them!! I have a four year old paint, Baby, that has had 8 weeks of training and to be safely ridden needs at least 12 more. We don't have the money, so we feed him and it's not worth it. There is no market now...but, your story is wonderfully written Beth! Technical stuff great! THAT I can see...I really enjoyed this! AND so glad you weren't hurt!! I've been thrown several times...and this horse I ride now, Buster, tried it once, and I managed to ride him out...I was so mad! ") What a ride!! I also LOVE that picture!! I'm working on a painting now and trying to get the muscles to look like that!! ") Hugs, susan

I guess we all go through that. I hope Lucky eventually got the training he needed. As I said, we didn't need a horse at the time although my husband and I both grew up in the country we weren't cut out for horses, especially after we moved to the city but I still think they are beautiful. I really appreciate your lovely review.

LOL Quite a story! Reminds me of a horse I tried to ride when I was about 23 years old. Even though I grew up on the farm, we did not have any horses like this one, and he must have known it! Anyway, I wound up being thrown to the ground with a twisted and broken right ankle which I could not get out of the stirrup! Well so much for that! This was an interesting story. I enjoyed reading it! Thanks! And drop in on me every once in a while.... I'll keep the light on for you! LOL Cletus Hardiman

No...!!! I just started using that on this site when I got back on it about 2 weeks ago! It just seem to fit. I am self-employed. A photographer ( on weekends ) and a master piano tuner / technician during the week. I also have a florist, but, I just do the paper work mostly for it. I do get "hooked" with doing some delivery at times! Thanks for asking.....Yes, Hi, folks this is Tom Bodette with Motel 6! LOL Clete
