That fact about the cormorant and his lovely crest is really interesting - Mother Nature never ceases to surprise us with Her array of gifts -a superb final line

We have Cormorants here in Australia. They are wonderful divers and sit in trees with their wings outspread waiting to dry out. Interesting fact about losing their crest. Perhaps it has something to do with the mating season? Thanks for sharing.

This poem had a lot of magical imagery in it for something that seems so simple at first. Really shows how beauty can be found in the little things in nature.

Thank you very much. But why a reduced rating? You didn't point out anything that needed to be improved, and I am just curious.

Hello, I'm new here so I'm still getting used to the rating system. I didn't quite realize that 4 start meant "good, but needs improvements" when I originally rated it. But, after re-reviewing how ratings are supposed to work, my review is more of a 5 star than a 4 star. So I went ahead and updated it to reflect the actual level I thought it was at. Anyway, thanks for your response, keep up the good writing.

They are absolutely amazing birds, the way they can swim underwater is incredible and the way they can dive into the water seamlessly, they are so divinely well designed for what they do, God is great. Beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

Thank you for the great review, Roy. They are truly God's birds and testament to the fact that He always has little miracles for us.

A nice little poem on the cormorant. We have a cormorant here on the coast of Maine, but they are fairly ugly and a pain in the ass. They make a terrible mess wherever they decide to roost.

"A Crest of Spring" is a skilled iambic pentameter rhyming A,B,A,B in each of its three stanzas. The poem celebrates the crested cormorant, an aquatic bird that in spring develops a two-crested crown of feathers. The poet chooses to use some terms of veneration where I think natural description would be preferable; for example, I think 'nymphs and seraphims' is a convenient but overworked way to infuse the descriptive poem with a glory that might be better developed by carefully chosen images and descriptions derived from nature. I also thought 'irrevocable splendor' was less than perfect in its choice of adjective; it seems that the bird's splendor is, like all things natural, revocable. I know I seem persnickety, but I really think that word choices are an element that separates exceptional from good or even very impressive poetry; I also feel that attentive readers of poetry sense these small missteps in a poet's choices.

This is an interesting and informative poem about the crested cormorant and how it dons its crest only in the spring. I see them plenty of times when I go on nature walks with my best friend David. He knows a lot about the different species of birds and can point out a cormorant in the air or in the water and he knows whether the bird is female or male, old or young. Cormorants are beautiful and full of life. I live on the coast in Northern California near a bay by the sea. David and I go there often to commune with the wildlife and envelope nature's negative ions.
Thanks for sharing and for letting me share as well.
Have a lovely day!
Jesse

-Thanks for sharing the image and poem, E.M.
-It brings back memories of Joan and how she is missed.
-You wrote a good poem with effective imagery and rhyme.
-I'm sure she must have been pleased.
-You paint a good word picture of the Cormorants:
"A finer symphony is hard to find."

A very stately looking bird and how unusual to only have their crest in spring. I enjoyed reading both your descriptive poem and notes about this crested cormorant. Cheers
