Who are those among us, who are not noticed, who are not affirmed, who are not exalted, who strive but gained no return?
Some believe they are "Job."
Excellent, perhaps a metaphor for all of us who
seek affirmation, while battling self depreciation.
Trying to march to another's tune; waiting for a simple accolade.
You have captured the steps to self acceptance; l could hear you singing, "My Way," as you opened our minds to the realization that we all are "Somebody.

Beth,
So true. It's sad when an artist isn't recognized during his time - it just doesn't really seem fair, does it? It's wonderful that people finally figured out this guy had an amazing pov and created a whole new way to look at things. Thanks! Congrats!

A superbly written poem and tribute to Vincent Van Gogh. It has great end rhyming, sincerity, warmth and empathy. I can feel your sorrow and your respect. Yes, his was a tragic end to such a master of art. Thank you for sharing Franky

I love Van Gogh's works. Thanks so much for reposting this. Your couplets spell out well the lack of support for Vincent's 'unique style' from the art critics. Too bad he was recognized post mortem.

Thank you for the review and comments. I was an art major and I found him to be an interesting artist. I also saw the movie once on his life. It was called Lust of Life. He died without much recognition.

This is wonderful! What a tribute to him. He really was ahead of his time! Your rhymes are so smooth and your words have so much meaning it's just an all-around great poem :-)

Yes, your poem told the story well. As with so my the those super talented before us, their lives were not all peaches and cream, but sometimes, those tortured souls are inspired and motivated by their pain. Thanks for sharing. Congratulations on the much deserved win!

Thank you RIc. You may be right about the pain being the motivating force that enables some to achieve such outstanding work. It is sad they don't always see the appreciation of others during their lifetime.

Excellent, a winner no doubt. Did you do this lately? If so I must have missed it. Anyway, congratulations on your win. You are a poet and don't know it. LOL.

What I liked about this poem was the perspective it shines on a life. And it really shows us a life of pain and promise, a life celebrating the beauty of the world, but tortured by the world in turn. It reminds me of that song by Jim Crocci, Starry starry night. estory

I love this poem and Vincent Van Gogh has long been one of my favorite artists. A print of Starry Night hung in my living room for years before I divorced and lost a lot of my treasured items. It's easy to see why you won this contest!
