Do you think it is necessary to be unhappy to recognise happiness when it comes our way? You are probably right Joan and finding contentment is all about not yearning for something we cannot have and being satisfied with life. When life turns bad we certainly do appreciate the good times, a poignant write, love Dolly x

Maybe I don't comprehend fully where the balance between love and pain emerges. Loss and pain are heavily accented. I find the ending stanza very reflective of the poet's thoughts. By nature an optimist, I find the poem dark in nature. Maybe that's what the author wanted to convey. Michael

Thanks, for the review. I was trying to make it sound like the Simon and Garfunkel song "I am a Rock." I am an optimist, too. I was just trying to say that you need the negative emotion to know how much better the positive emotion is.

Life is incomplete without opposites and herein you clarify an example of why opposites are needed. Love can come with many scars, battle earned and meritorious if victory is acheived.

This was a great poem. Sadly all too relatable. Really puts a lot of thoughts and emotions I've felt into words. Letting the bridge down and the rocks crumble is never easy but to live a life closed off is a cold one indeed. Thanks for sharing!

I absolutely loved this, I think you've encumbered the importance of love really well within these beautiful lines.
You even got me trying to sing it....

    Hi Mitchell,
Thanks for the review. If you would like to write music for it, go ahead. Just give me credit for the lyrics if it gets recorded (haha)

This poem was very lyrical. I liked the way the stanzas kept talking about how the basis for the fortress was crumbling. It wasn't until the end that it's revealed the crumbling and eroding is a good thing. Great poem. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Gretchen

I enjoyed reading your well thought out poem, DP. This is one
readers need to read two or more times to get the full impact
of your well-chosen words. I remember the original song and its
haunting feeling of being walled off from love and other people.
Your poem highlighted how love can and does change everything.
It is vital for humans to have and to know others love them for
many reasons. Love is a complex emotion that has many up and
downs, sadness and happiness. But it is one that's vital to the living.
Relationships are complex, too. One must believe there's someone
for him/her even if a relationship fails--don't wall yourself off from
another one.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

I know that song by Paul Simon. I like your poetic version. It's true that without knowing sorrow, maybe we can't fully appreciate and contrast it to joy. It's good that we are not rocks and can be cleansed through tears.

Deep. To know joy, one must acknowledge the existence of sorrow. the power of pain is replaced by the power of relief one feels when the pain has eased. If you never experience dark, the joy of light is diminished. Very good write, I like it.
