Your short story introduces us to a young girll who is traumatized by death. It is hard to believe her reaction until you realize the era and the small town she grew up in. Today's youth are desensitized early because of the video media they are constantly exposed to. I was delighted by the final scene when we learn WHAT the head really was. Excellent characterization of the narrator. Rod

Thank you, I was only six or seven and we didn't have television. The idea of death was traumatizing for me.

When I was that age, my grandmother would take my sister and me on walks through the cemetery.

That is interesting, well written, and humorous. We all have our special fears. I actually feel that your fear of death was not unreasonable, although it was excessive. Evi

Thank you for the review. I was over traumatized by the idea of death. I grew up in an age without TV so I wasn't desensitized to it like kids today are.

That was very interesting. I can understand why death is so fearsome to some people. Its too often associated with pain, loss, and the uncertainty of what will come next.

Thank you for the review. I'm hoping you found some humor to my reaction for something which wasn't what I thought it was. I did outgrow my horror of death but my mom seemed afraid I wouldn't.

I wish you had entered this in one of the contests. It could have applied to a few of them.
You are no doubt on the conservative side of how often that story made the rounds, year-after-year. Prob'ly still being told.
Best wishes.

Thank you for the review an comments. Since it was one I'd written earlier it wasn't eligible for a contest. I'm glad you liked it and gave it a six star review.

You shared your story well, Beth. I could understand your
fear of death. You gave readers some great and true examples.
I'm surprised your mother brought that sculpture to the car
knowing how you felt--must've slipped her mind for an
instant. I'm glad for you that you worked through your fear
as you got older.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Thank you Jan, I'm sure my mom saw that head as art and thought I would be impressed with it. If she realized what a wild imagination I had she might have thought twice about bringing it out.

Oh dear, Beth, this did bring a smile on my face. I can just imagine your mother coming out with that face. Poor you. You must have been terrified.
I never thought much about death, until my adoptive father fell terminally ill, when I was 15. I was devastated. Ulla:)))

Thank you Ulla. I'm sure it didn't occur to my mom I would think what I did. I must shocked her almost as much as she shocked me. It is pretty funny now.

You are an excellent writer, Beth. I enjoyed this story from start to finish and laughed at your reactions and thoughts when Mother brought out the bust. I do think fairy tales can be frightening though.

Living on a farm is not for the faint of heart. Oh no, Bambi! Okay, after that explanation, I was laughing so hard. That was a great story, Beth. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks so much for sharing.

Well, in today's world it would be even worse to have such an obsession and fear of death, since it's in every movie, on every television show, and in every book. But I'm glad you got over your fear. :-) Thanks for sharing.

Yes, Beth, I'm with you. I'd much rather watch a comedy or something cheerful and entertaining. But nowadays, most of the comedies aren't even funny to me. I guess, I'm too old for the humor. LOL. :-)

I agree with that. It's been a while since any movie made me laugh out loud. Real life is funnier than most movies.

Let's face it no one likes death. It is harsh and mean. I don't think we ever get used to it, we just grow callous.
Your story had two swings. It went from the sad conditions of our youth today into a humorous piece, yet somehow you made them both flow into each other.
Nice job.
