So realistic in its detail and outline of the housing situation - the closing line is just so funny - a sense of humor is a must in these situations - most enjoyable read.

Oh my goodness! You were so flexible to take that place and adjust despite all the strange arrangements and being so close to other residents. You did a fabulous job in storytelling. It's so good you had that piggybank savings!

staring roles in a horror film (starring)

Oh, my, Beth you had a lot harder time starting out on your life's journey than I did! That kitchen reminds me of one in a loft apartment that a girlfriend and I rented in Toronto when we went to work there in 1970. I could barely stand up in it, and I didn't understand how the small oven worked. I burned anything I tried to cook in it! I'm enjoying this part of your story. Well done.

Thank you Judy. I didn't too much cooking. I mostly opened cans and heated them on top of the stove. I had avoided Home Ec. and Mom had let me get away with outdoor chores.

Thanks for sharing Beth, fortunately for us the first flat we ever shared was in a large complex of flats, so we were OK, but never had your "adventures". These early days of marriage for you two, was at least, exciting, fortunately it happened in your resilient youth, beautifully written Beth, thanks for sharing your life with us, well done, blessings Roy

Thank you Roy. Yes, I very glad all that happened when we were still young enough to handle most anything. It was an adventure and I'd not had many adventures up to that point in my life.

Brilliant segue from the prior gem to this one! Your trademark wry humor remains in full force--great ending as to the comparison between the resident roaches. Delightful story!

Thank you Elizabeth. I'm glad you like it. It makes it worth the renewal, although the best you can hope for is running the number of reviews up enough to get a best of.

However did I miss this, Beth? This is really funny and in a sense it's not. You're starting up a new life together and it doesn't quite work out to plan. I loved it. I have to go back to the beginning. Ulla:)))

I wrote this over ten years ago so it was likely before you joined FanStory. Evan was still alive. Thank for the review and comments. This is an earlier book. I'm reposted the chapters.

LOL. I can see this unfolding. Oh, what young newlyweds go through trying to get started in life, but when looking back, it was fun. Good one, Beth.

Thank you, Chuck. Actually, as horrible as it sounds, it was fun and I wouldn't take anything for the memories. Thank for the six stars.

I don't know how I missed the beginning of this, but it's very exciting, Beth! I wouldn't ever want to miss out on my chance to learn how your wonderful family got started. It seems that a few misadventures preceded the start of the Shelby family enterprise.

Errors and suggestions:

Continuing adventures of newly weds.

The whole apartment sounds truly unique. A split-level, walk-through bathroom, off-limits areas, locked doors -- at least you didn't have Norman Bates as a neighbor!

I don't think you missed it. Since I worte it over ten years ago it was far back in my portfolio. I wrote it again when I was writing talking to my husband. You may have missied it. That one started earlier when we were dating and I was just starting eleventh grade. This version is a little more amusing.
Again, I trully appreciate your help.

You're very welcome, as always. I guess you have multiple versions of your family history. I find them all interesting, because I'm always learning something new.
I loved the soggy sandwiches part. My Grandma used to make me soggy sandwiches when I was working, when I was young, and I loved them. They were good times.
God bless you in all your writing!
    Love, Mary Kay xoxo

Like everything you write, this witty and entertaining chapter gives us a look back at similar times in most of our lives. As usual, I wish I had a six to reward you properly. Thanks for sharing.

isn't it strange how laughter got us through those times and now laughter makes it easier to remember them too. You had a lot to face but I believe it made you and your marriage stronger.

Hugs, Carol

Thank you Carol. I think it made us stronger and we laughed a lot about all those early days. We didn't either one know what we were doing, but we learned together.
