I wish we'd thought to take a photo of that old root beer shack.

this was hillarious. Your dad had a great sense of humor. Same reason I used to love to take my kids to haunted houses. Great job.

Hi foxtale,

Hilarious ending there. I can see it clearly, hope you all had changes of underwear to hand though and I suspect a few of the people around your car needed the paramedics. Lovely tribute.

You describe such a fun time here. My parents and I went to the Drive in when I was growing up, so this brought back memories for me. I enjoyed reading this, no revisions needed.

thanks. you might like The Missing Link, or Broomstick and Rubberband Bazooka, from the same era. Chapters in the same book I've compiled.

Very heartfelt and expressive, describing well what life in a large family is like (i.e., very little money and amused with simple pleasures!)

And yes,"Banshee" is a perfectly good word but it seems to have gone out of vogue since old-style horror movies have given way to high-tech sci-fi and new-style vampire shows!

I like your writing style!

    Thanks.
Several more 'remembrances' are in my portfolio. Such as Broomstick & Rubberband Bazooka; about how juvenile crime used to be handled!

Great story! Our drive-in is now a motor speedway and the one in the down next door is a lumber yard. Dad wouldn't take us to the Horror movies, we only went when there was a Western ha ha ha. I really enjoyed this. it brought back a lot of memories of a simpler time or so it seemed .

Ah foxtale,

What a lovely piece, from the introductory paragraph to the author's notes at the end. It will touch anyone who reads it, especially those that have loved and lost a "hero" parent, the person we looked to the most.

Really most enjoyable. Keep up the good work.

Keith

Oh my gosh, I wasn't sure about the story at first but I kept with it and am very glad I did. The end of your story is classic. It has been a long day, but it made me laugh for a good minute or so. I can just imagine the chaos that went on that night.

GREAT story!

If he saw this story, I'm sure he felt a lot of pride and had a great time recounting other high moments. Things change as we age, sometimes not for the better. Think families were a lot closer back then. Liked how the opening section reminds everyone we cannot go back in time, so enjoy the moment. Didn't notice any SPAG while reading.

I read this story at my dad's 75th birthday party. A joyous family gathering, little did we know we'd lose Dad a scant 2 years later. (The first two paragraphs were added later when I was asked to read this story again at his eulegy) and then it was suggested I publish it. The Front Porch periodical and Nostalgia magazine both published this.

I think that your Dad was very proud to hear that story read to him. What a great tribute to him. Loved the ending.

Unfortunately, I grew up in military bases overseas and never had the experience of going to drive-ins until I was old enough to date and then we usually did not watch the double feature. Thanks for the memories. Charlie.
