What a lovely memory - I had no idea divinity candy was made from a potato - learn something every day! I love parents who allow their children to help and to feel a part of things this way - what a great family gathering and way to celebrate the tasty product of mutual labor. Your story is most touching. Brooke

I see why this won all time best. I?m Jewish I only know about the Christmas tradition through retailers.
However, once long ago when my mother was still alive. And, I already an adult. She had surgery around the Christmas holiday.
She always had the neighborhood children in and out of her house. She was a great baker and very generous with he cookies and cakes. So while she was recovering there was a knock at the door and a group of children. Presented her with a scraggly tree decorated with home made paper ornaments. It was the only Christmas tree that ever graced her window.

Thank you for your lovely review and comments. Your mother must have been a wonderful, loving woman to have the children of the neighborhood in her heart's grasp. Children know unconditional love when they feel it and see it. God Bless

I have never heard of this. Potato candy?? And you start by saying you boil ONE potato but then you go on to say you spend 4 hours cutting and packing it for the entire village ... on one potato. Something's missing. A sentence would probably do it, maybe a short paragraph but this feels incomplete! Is that the complete recipe? How does the potato candy hold together? Thanks for an interesting story

Thank you for your review and your comments. No, this is not the complete recipe. There is a secret ingredient I did not mention. It takes 4 hrs to make, not package. Hope you enjoyed my story.

I found this an interesting story. It was well written, held this readers attention. I wanted to find out about this change candy made from a potato. Still do not quite understand it. Would have liked the recipe to be in the story, so we novices could try potato candy. No spag.
One tweak: "was quickly shed of his skin." - I was not sure why the potato was a male. Thought maybe its skin might be better.
Well done.

Gentlewind, what was this confection called? I'm not sure I've ever heard of it. It sounds sinfully delicious. This is a wonderful Christmas Eve memory to share with the rest of us. Thanks.

i found that heart warming and it makes me drool, gentle wind, I just thought Christmas and Gods love , is highlighted in m,any ways, and this is one of them, but it may be kinda difficult for us to channel more than one line of thought at a time.

Hi Gentle. I have not heard of potato being used for candy before. Seems quite strange but you have described the whole event so wonderfully
