Excellent entry for the Tanka Poetry Contest. Good composition and lovely presentation. I prefer to connect lines grammatically to flow better, but it's your choice.

I have a suggestion....

trees dance in the storm
with deep strong roots through hard times (add a dash here) --
so goes it with m(a)n *men

Good luck!

Dear D,
You have a winner here, my friend. If I write a book on adversity, I'll contact you. This would be a great prologue. Right now, I'm still in the refinery as God must not be finished with me yet. Fantastic in this form. Sending you my best today as always.

God may never be finished with us. Who knows what adventurers and growth lie beyond this realm? Speaking of this realm, hope you are on the mend. Prayers.

I coined a phrase which came to mind, "it's not on the mountain that one learns tenacity but in the valley of despair" this is a great entry in this tanks contest doubles, good to see you again, beautifully written, blessings Roy

I believe the strength is in the roots, be it human or nature's plants. I know I have tried to pull the smallest of vines from the ground and discovered their roots stretched far down and across the soil. We learn and grow from our ancestery and the roots they planted long before our time. And when storms strike, it is those roots that help us through them. Good job!

Trees have the ability to remain standing in terrible weather and their roots often go down deeper that the night above ground. Trees also link with other tree roots under ground to give them stability. I enjoyed your poem in praise of trees Douglas, love Dolly x x x

That is a fine Tanka, and yes, there are some good life lessons contained within your words about the elements of nature. Something to meditate on, inall our present life situations. Best wishes for your poem in the contest.

Wow, this is a profound little tanka! No wasted words here. Just like the trees, we grow in strength and stability through challenging forces. And for every high is a corresponding low, our nadirs potentially enriching the soul. I like the way that 'soul' is so close to 'soil,' that we remember:
"Wisdom is oft-times nearer when we stoop/Than when we soar." (William Wordsworth). Well done, Doug! Thank you for sharing your thoughtfully considered verse. Good luck! Debbie

Well, who is to argue with nature. I always thought the mighty oak set roots deep but Ms Helene came through the Carolina's and blew them over like they were duck pins with a sixteen pound bowling ball. Maybe, she only took out the weaker ones.

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. I loved the metaphor for life with the trees and the root system. Listen, YOU!!! I am missing Greg big time and need a good dose of him. LOL Please don't be away so long, again. Good luck with the contest.

Your tanka is in great form with the physical observation in the beginning and the pivot in the middle and a universal truth about human life at the end. Hope you haven't been through any adversity lately. Best wishes in the contest!
