This poem is heartfelt and unwavering in its devotion. The rhythm is steady, the rhyme mostly consistent, and the message is clear: a personal relationship with a loving, protecting, sacrificial God.
The lines "there is victory in those nails" and "You thought nothing of the cost / as you hung dying on the cross" carry emotional weight and theological conviction.
The poem's structure works well across its stanzas, moving from comfort and protection into sacrifice and resurrection. The use of second person throughout makes it feel like a prayer-intimate and direct.
There are moments where the phrasing becomes slightly uneven (e.g., "satan's minions take flight" feels more abrupt in tone than the surrounding lines), and a few rhymes lean on expected pairings (friend/depend, one/Son), but these are minor.
