Though humorous, this story is sincere, emotional and heartfelt. Dogs are family. As a child, I grew up with many dogs, all outside dogs. My dad had as many as sixteen at one time, all beagles. They were always a barrel of fun, but it's not the same as an individual dog buddy like you described. I enjoyed this story and understood the tears.

That is a wonderful tribute to your canine friend, well written and touching. I haven't seen the movie, but now I plan to, but I guess I better pick up extra Kleenex. It is so sad when a beloved pet leaves us, and we find both joy and sorrow in remembering the lives they shared with us. Thank you for sharing the story and pictures. Evi

Thank you. He may be gone but will never be forgotten, and I hope we will be reunited over the rainbow bridge when and if I cross over for what will we do if there is no hope for an afterlife?

WE had as much fun as Charley did with Steinbeck which I have in the wings but cannot find a contest to release it. Thanks for your kind words.

A beautiful story, in parts humorous, but very moving. I know you loved him so much, and I remember your deep grief at losing him - it mirrored mine when I lost my previous dog. You related his life story, and your companionship, beautifully.

Pets are our kids too. I am highly allergic , but even so, every now and then I would have a pet. They consume us. And they train us far better than we train them. good writing. karen

As stated in the story, paragraph eight, Buddy rules the roost, and I was his rake at his beck and call, which was just fine. He was my most photogenic subject, and the Beardie is well known as being the best dog in front of a camera. Thank you

Tom,

I'm sorry for the loss of your fur baby. I feel your pain as I lost my Angel in December 2024. Like you I cried more for her than I did my mother. Fur babies are the best and we will always have the memories and the pictures. Forever in our hearts.

Cecilia

Buddy went to where he could run all day, and eat whenever, then nap without a care all night, and every now and then I feel his presence breathing with the dawns first light expecting me to take him for his constitutional walk.

For all but a few years of my seventy in existence so far, I've had a dog in my life. Currently we have three and that'll be three more times I'll cry like a baby, as I've done with all my others.

Your story was well written Tom. I'm glad you shared it with us.

Tom, This is a very well written story about Buddy. It was very neat how he came to be your true buddy. Movies that don't end well make me sad too. I am so sorry for the loss of Buddy! Thanks for sharing! Teri

Two years have passed and I still feel as if he breathes on me as the sun rises reminding me it's his time togo. Thanks "t".

That movie sends me into huge crying jags. It is so real. I love your dog just from all the pictures you post. I feel the same about the dog that I lost and I hope the pain never goes away completely because it carries with it all the wonderful memories she brought me. Thanks for sharing this beautiful piece.

Indelible etchings in our mind unless dementia comes along, and even then if Christians are right and the resurrections isn't a fantasy we will recall all we have done and thought, uh-oh, and maybe even meet again the ones we loved up there or worse downstairs I guess for those who fall short.

I understand how you feel. I know a dog can tug at your heartstrings. Making the decision to let them go brings on more tears than almost anything can. I've seen the movie you mention. It is a tear jerker.
