That's a great story, and I bet you play the mandolin just fine, and you are probably learning really fast. It is wonderful when we can pursue a dream of our younger years. Evi

A very amusing story (*<>*) I don't play any musical instruments but my children do. I'm curious if you found helpful youtube videos on how to play. It sounds hard to me. It's never too late to learn something new. Well done.

Here's hoping you conquer your endeavors with the mandolin, John. But even if you don't, you gained so much more on that big 70 birthday....time with your family knowing that cared enough about you to find out what you truly wanted and to get it for you. Also, you learned that age is only a number and you are willing to learn new things every day. And three, whether you learn or it sits in a corner, the love you felt when yo held it in your hands - of music, of life, and of family.
Hugs, Carol

Absolutely, John, there is always hope. Thank you so much for sharing this fun read with us. I have actually heard of this ukulele band. I'm sure you will be getting there. Meanwhile, just have fun with your mandolin. Ulla:)))

This is an excellent story. Thank you for sharing a piece of your life with us. I hope things are progressing with the mandolin. I do not see any need for improvement. Have a blessed day.

I love to hear good mandolin playing. I so enjoyed going to see Marty Stewart play. I've seen Ricky Scaggs on TV. Really hard to beat him.
Thanks for posting and helping keep this music alive.

Right!! And don't worry, John, you can do it. Besides YouTube, there are chords and music online. My favorite is the two-finger chords webpage for mandolin. I got one a long time ago thinking because I have teeny pencil-like fingers, mandolin should be natural for me! But actually, I like piano and ukulele better and yes, guitar. What I found about the mandolin is that the sound is too metallic for me and it's a pain to tune all 8 of the strings. Mine is like yours. But I'm cheering you on, John!!

Thank you Helen for this positive review and those shining six stars! So you play the ukulele? Awesome. I'll have to check the two finger chord website. Thanks for that and everything.

I know of a guy, he was my religion professor in college, who retired and opened a wood-working shop Appalachian Tree Works in Brevard NC who just this week burned an incomplete mandolin he had begun years ago knowing that his age has disallowed him from completing it.

I wish you luck with your lessons and I enjoyed this uplifting post here John. I love the sound of the Mandolin, it is gentle and romantic. Age has nothing to do with learning a new skill, it is all about determination and you can do it. I found your post heartwarming and pleasing, I hope you entertain your family in the future with your talented playing, love Dolly x x x

Absolutely right! Where there is a will there's a way, and when you master those Italian favourites please let us all know so we can celebrate with you! Meanwhile enjoy your daily practice - and prove to yourself and to any naysayers that one is never too old, and fingers are never too fat. Go for it. Well said, and engaging writing.
