love this call to action in a haiku like format. I like the twisted ending to the poem about a real life problem. Unfortunately, it seems we are moving towards a harsh society that criminalizes people for being homeless and even doing something simple like handing out food to the homeless can result in severe criminal liabilities for the people handing out the food. Happened in Florida a few years ago. an older man was fined thousands of dollars for handing out sandwiches in public park because he did not a food vendor license. Some people at the time were upset on line saying that handing out food somehow encourages homelessness totally ignoring the lack of affordable housing for the homeless.

We are pouring money out on all the wrong things. My two cents.

Thank you Douglas for helping us to remember the less fortunate. Especially since we are facing severe winter weather here on the East Coast. Your stark verse really captures the theme that we need to reach out and help.

Thank you, Melissa. I think we are getting to an All-Hands -On-Deck level
of need at this point.

This is an excellent entry for the 5-7-5 Poetry Contest. I don't think I could love this any more than I do. Perfect in it's simplicity with so much said in so few words. I hope your resolution comes true. Great job.

That is a sad one, the final line tells a really sad story. But this is such a good contest entry. It's one that would, hopefully, have people look at the plight of the homeless and try to do something about it. Well done and good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

That was the goal, Sandra. Hoping more
people join in the struggle!

Excellent 5/7/5 poem with a powerful message. Your notes are spot on. There is so much we could do with little effort. Our church has a food pantry and we pack "buddy bags" for children to take home on weekends and for holidays hoping that helps them.
Thank you for sharing.
Blessings
Janet.

Keep up the good work with the pantry. Very positive action helps. Hopefully my message hits home for some and they join in the effort!

This is a really strong message within your 5-7-5 and a really important one at that. We do a lot of charity events around Christmas time in particular for the homeless, coat collections and canned goods etc.
Thats a great idea leaving things hanging on tree's for those who need extra warmth, well done.
Happy New Year to you and yours !
Best Wishes

Douglas.
With just those few words, you are able to put the homeless issue in perspective as well as plant food for thought in the readers mind.
Many, turn a blind eye in this situation. It's a sin to see how many there are on the streets in NYC.
Well written my friend.

Thanks, John. I think the issue is going to need all of us. All hands on deck.

Your well-crafted five-seven-five has brought out the warmth and the bitter cold of the conditions that exist for the haves and the have-nots. We do similar things in our community.

The author's words are thought provoking and made me think of the homeless. Thank you for the author's notes - some great ideas! Giving to some of the children's charities and hospitals at Christmas is also another way to help. The poem flows and connects well. It was an inspiring poem!
Happy New Year! Maria

Hi Douglas, where I live...they have shelters
for the homeless...and the disabled...
I live in Illinois...and the nights and days
do get cold...we have to take care of people
in need...I know there are people who try
and work the streets...who have money...
but we can't turn our backs on those who
need us...
I love your poem my sweet friend...and love
your picture...very nicely written...love Linda xxoo
