A touching tribute to the wives who wait and the men who serve and the seemingly endless stress of a term of service.
It was lovely to read a positive outcome so eloquently written with that tension building to a sweet, touching reunion.

I think every family that has sat and waited for someone to return from war deserves a medal as well. It's difficult to have your life ripped apart and then wonder if the pieces are ever going to come back together. Thank you so much for reading and enjoying this story.

I enjoyed this happy love story with its satisfying ending. However, I have a couple of picky questions, just in case I misunderstood.
Why were the officers knocking on Jessica's door. Did they leave their quarters thinking Ken was dead? Plus, I know Jessica would be able to see her neighbor's face if the neighbor was across the street, but how could she see her face was pale if the house was next door beside Jessica's?

I was tryng to build the tension and in my mind the officers were going to ask Jessica to check in on her neighbor because she was new and didn't have any family in the area. I should have made it clearer. As for seeing her face, she was standing on her porch so she was visible. Hope that helps.

I too love happy endings as you know. Its hard for me to write sadness into other people's lives even if they are my characters when I don't want it to be in mine. Thanks for the review.

Well that's a lovely ending. Unless you lived next door. Then it was a terrible ending.
Can you imagine how it must have felt being happy that they didn't come to your door, but then that meant somebody else's loved one had died.
Awful
Great feelings in this one.

It would have been gut wrenching, but I didn't know how else to build the tension. Glad it wasn't a true story.

It must be so hard for families who have relatives serving their country at Christmas time, and I can imagine the joy families must feel when their loved ones return home. You described this very well in your piece, Carol. I really enjoyed reading it.

Thanks, Jacob. I can't imagine being pregnant and waiting for your husband to return. Mine was in the military and scheduled to go to Vietnam, but they didn't send him because I was having a difficult pregnancy. He lucked out.... my baby didn't.

Maybe what we have here is a collection of Christmas short stories in a special anthology from Carol. Dare we call it A Christmas Carol? Let's think on it. Thanks for sharing your talent.

A Christmas Carol...right because I am Scrooge...LOl I think I would like to make it into a book if I keep going at the pace I am. Everyone seems to be enjoying the stories. I've got several more in the works.

I am glad her story had a happy ending - unfortunately the neighbour's story was not so fortunate. Did the officers just go to Jessica's place to ask her to keep an eye on the grieving neighbour? very well written, with emotion and tension both running deep.

Yes, she was all alone and new to the neighborhood so they were going to ask Jessica to make a call on her...but of course, that's not what Jessica thought.

You are a powerhouse. I could feel the worry and suffering. You made me feel her deeply felt sorrow.
If I had any tears left you would have had me crying my eyes out. This is very good. I have no sixes left. Karen

Great story! I'm glad it has a happy ending. I could feel the agony Jessica was going through with the men at her door, but having just left her neighbor's house -- good writing on your part. Blessings. Carol

Your stories are so well written. I try to save a six for a gem that comes later in the week, so it can be recognized as well.

Jessica fears losing her husband in the war as all wives of soldiers do. Her neighbor has lost a son, and she fears Ken is also dead. I'm not sure why the soldiers came to her door, but Ken is there when she awakens. Her fears are wrong, but her dream comes true.

Thanks so much for your kindness. I apologize for being so far behind. It's a vicious cycle and I can't get caught up. Appreciate your time and thoughts.
