Short and sweet and straight to the point. Well done! I thought it was the female being dumped. And her response was priceless. This very small piece really packed a punch. Loved it.

I personally don't think you could have written it any better. You've left all of us having to think and even re-read to make a decision for ourselves. Great job! Thanks for sharing.

Regardless of who was the conversation initiator, I found the dialogue to be quite under developed and just a few short barbs at each character. It didn't seem like a finished story to me, since there was a lot to develop here.

Wow! Now there's a situation that is beyond awful... putting myself there, I would say a scene would not be worth him... of course, the feeling stems from a bit of personal 'experience'... Thanx for sharing and best of luck, sir! :) Yvette

I read your author's notes and I would've fit in with the 75%. I can't picture a man saying, "You gutless wonder, you brought me here thinking I wouldn't create a scene." It doesn't sound like what a man would say. At least not a man I know. Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. Good luck with the contest.

Comment from Pam Lonsdale
I did think the woman started the conversation and, generally speaking, she would have ended it because she told him to get his wallet out. Men tend to make more money, so they pay more in a divorce settlement. But it is an interesting survey. Were men the majority of that 25%?
A good dialogue only - right to the point and, as you say, ambiguous. Good luck in the contest.

The majority were women, but there were a few in the 25% as well, mostly men in the 25%.
Comment from Tim Margetts
I was unsure, until a bit of a way in, then I thought it was the woman divorcing the man.
It is a very ambiguous piece though and this also makes it a very clever piece of writing.
Well done
Tim

Comment from Charlotte Morse
Oh it was definitely him dumping her, it never occurred to me it might be the other way around - a man would be more likely to use their restaurant, a man would be more worried about creating a scene, and it tends to be women who call men jerks rather than visa versa.
Ha ha well that's my opinion anyway! :)
Good luck.

Comment from Sandra Stoner-Mitchell
That was definitely her who started the conversation, and he was the villian of the story. That a man would ask for a divorce in a public place, and at their favourite restaurant, is very cowardly. She will wipe the floor with him in the divorce court. Well done, this was a well written contest entry. Good luck! :)) Sandra xx

Comment from Wayne Fowler
Interesting.
It seems obvious to me that the woman began the conversation, that she was being dumped and that the man chose the site. I wonder if the 25% who thought differently are all men, or women?
In any case, you tell a bleak tale.
Good luck in the contest.

The 25% were a few women and mostly men. It was an interesting study that I hadn't planned. Thank you Wayne.
