Hi Katharine,
It's been awhile since I read the last chapter, so I had a bit of at time following along. I liked the way you left the reader wondering what was going to happen next. If the burglar alarm was turned off, it must mean someone that knew the code turned it off. Interesting.
Have a blessed day.

so it does, and you've thrown me into a qandry. hmmm.
Had my neighborhood Christmas party last night and am exhausted today, but it was fun.I'd forgotten it was the big TX/GA game. The husbands came in talking about it so I turned it on in the kitchen, which turned out to be the most fun group. Those not into football were comfortable in the living room where there was a nice warm fire. Katharine came down from Austin to help me - she was a huge help and she was glad to meet my neighbors and they, her.
Thanks for your comments on my crazy story.I think I have boxed myself into a corner with the code thing.
reply by T B Botts on 09-Dec-2024
It sounds like you had a good time. You can figure something out- perhaps the power went out temporarily and it caused the alarm to need rebooted or some such thing.
reply by the author on 09-Dec-2024
ah, Tom, am laughing. You are such a sweetie! The only thing I came up with was one time Kate went out of town and Marilyn stayed in her house (to get away from Jim) and Kate gave her the code.
reply by the author on 09-Dec-2024
Your suggestions is better than mine. It dawned on me If it was marilyn, why the heck was she there in the dark? I gotta think some more. That party kinda wore me out.

I know what you mean gal. A few days a week I go to work at the cafe' or church doing dishes or janitorial work, and I'm exhausted by the time I get home. Naps are pretty much a part of my schedule just about every day now.
reply by the author on 10-Dec-2024
my naps are in my chair at my computer, short ones as you can imagine. Dadgummit, Tom, I don't know how I'm going to get out of this story, but I've got to come up with something. Don't have enough characters and never said what Kate did for a living. argh!!!
reply by T B Botts on 11-Dec-2024
Well, the best thing is not to stress out gal. It's hard to do anything when you're under pressure. Just lay it aside for a bit, maybe even pray for an answer. If it's important to you, it's important to God. It's going to be ok gal.
    Blessings, Tom

    well, Yvette, even without your
delightful presence, the party turned out to be a lot of fun. My cute daughter came down from Austin to help me and reminded me that it was the night of the big TX-GA game, so I turned it on in the kitchen and it was raucous, fun time. The non- football fans were in the living room in front of the fire - it was a cold, rainy night, but back to my story.
Well, actually, not back to the story. I've got to get a good night's sleep first. And then...

Awe, yes, much better. Can you see what the difference it made? You are doing such a great job with this and at leaving those surprise endings that we were talking about, actually cliff hangers and people are loving it. I just went and read your reviews. I hope you are having as much fun as I am reading it.

I left those comments last night because I didn't want to review them to tell you but for now on if I have something to say maybe I should mention it here so you get it sooner. I love your story and I cannot wait for the next one, my little crime writing friend. Love it and thanks for the exciting read, Kay. Lotsa love, Debi

I know I've asked you this before, but you have to understand your friend is getting older and I don't remember things like I should, so... where did you tell me you read my reviews? same place I read them?
    Thanks. Deb, for your friendship!!!!!
reply by Debi Pick Marquette on 06-Dec-2024
Well I read them underneath your story where you'll find some little boxes that say different things and the one to look for is where it says view ratings. Click on that or another place that says click here. Let me know if you find it.

A very clever way to end this chapter, keeping the reader in suspense and anxiously waiting for the next chapter. A suspenseful addition to your Book. Don

First, why would Jim try to blame his wife and also why did Kate have a gun too. Something's not adding up and Jim doesn't have the "guts" to be the brains behind all of this. More to the story than the reader can see!

Jim's a cowardly soul. He waited too late to want out of the drug deal, because he knew all the City councilmen who were involved in it. That was mentioned in the story.
Kate, like many single business women (and other women) had a gun in her office in case something like what happened, happened. Jim, typical of a coward, blamed his wife so the drug hitman for hire wouldn't kill him, like what happened to Mildred (killed in first chapter.) Jim was not the brains behind the drug deal. Carl was the instigator. He's the real villain.

Oh, my! It looks like Kate is out of one predicament and into another. I'll be curious to see what is going on in the office. Jim certainly tries to lie his way out of things. It looks Kate is in the clear with the police, although she was found holding two guns. I suppose the police will see Jim gets medical attention, even though he is a rotten scoundrel. Great, exciting story. judi

wow, a 6! thank you, ma'am! Yeah, I guess I left poor Jim unattended medically.
If I had an office by myself, in today's world, I would have a gun; in fact I had one until I was unable to shoot it because of the arthritis in my hands. So now, all I have is roach spray! pitiful!
I think I deleted the part I wrote about the police chief had a visiting GP who came by regularly to treat anyone needing medical attention. Guess I need to put it back. I don't know of a police station who has one, but It's not a bad idea :)
    Thanks again for the 6!!!

You're very welcome. We wouldn't want that roach Jim to be treated like a cockroach, would we? I like Kate's responses during that situation. Wonder how things will turn out between her and Marilyn, if Marilyn has been conplicant. Happy writing for the next episode. judi

last night (Sat) for the whole neighborhood. Lots of work but lots of fun. I didn't realize it was the big TX vs GA game and all the guys were talking about how they left it to come, so I turned it on in the kitchen and of course that's where everybody congregated - well, back and forth to the dining room. Some non football fans did sit in the living room with the fire . It was rainy and cold outside. My daughter, Bless her, came down from Austin and was a huge help, spent the night and helped me get dining room chairs back in and carried huge bags of water softener salt pellets in and put in the big tank, and other heavy things. and she met my neighbors and they, her, so that was nice. All in all I'm glad I had it, but also glad it's over.

Sounds like everyone had a great time. I might watch basketball, but don't care for football. judi
reply by the author on 09-Dec-2024
I didn't watch it either, I was in and out of the kitchen replenishing food on the table, and talking to people.
Do you know that this morning it was 50 degrees, and this afternoon it's supposed to be 83!!! and then Thurs morning, 34?? Isn't that crazy?

You left me with a cliff hanger, you naughty girl. No, I love it. You have a very action packed story.here and I like the interaction between Kate and Marilyn. A few spags. Some quote marks randomly missing and some speech tags inside quote marks. But other than that really spectacular story. I'm really enjoying this. Gretchen

Thanks, Gretchen. There's no wonder I have weird quotes and stuff; this is really a busy time for me as I'm having a Christmas party for my whole neighborhood tomorrow, and my pool is leaking and my double oven is on the blink. And i write this story pretty fast. Somebody said there was too much time in between chapters, so i've tried to do better, but mistakes are inevitable. (sounds like I went berserk) Thanks for telling me about those. I'll try to fix them.

The story is great. A rushed writer is a cursed writer. I hope your party is more fun than trouble.
reply by the author on 08-Dec-2024
The party was actually a lot of fun. My daughter came down from Austin to help me, bless her heart, and as she has never met a stranger, she added a lot to its being fun. It was rainy and cold, and I had a fire in the livingroom, but I hadn't known it was the night for the big Texas- GA game so I had the game on in the kitchen where all the guys, and my daughter and some of the women were having a grand old time, except TX lost.

From one cliffhanger last episode to a new one in this.
An excellent story so far, although I am not to sure how accurate the police officers are, especially 'murrican ones.
I always get the impression of them being much more... American.
LOL
Maybe I watch too many videos on YouTube hehe.
Roll on the next chapter

how do you mean? accurate about what? I really want to know, if you don't mind. I have to admit I'm not too fond of the police. There's this one guy whose voice I recognize who calls every 5 minutes (slight exaggeration) for a "donation." But it's not always for the police, but it's the same voice. I've gotten where i hang up the minute I hear his voice.
reply by Tim Margetts on 07-Dec-2024
I may be misinterpreting but I got the impression this was set in America, if it's not then my apologies.
My only experience of the American police is the things that hit the news or the YouTube type of media and these portray American police as overly dominant and aggressive in their approach to policing, where these guys seemed very casual about a shooting situation.
I can only really talk as a Brit so if I am wrong then I can accept that and only apologise.

reply by the author on 08-Dec-2024
Tim, you are right and I owe you the apology. I was writing in a hurry - never a good thing, and even thought to myself that they didn't sound realistic. So thanks for the very nice tap on the wrist, which I needed. Personally, I haven't had call to be around the police, except they're on my cell phone every 5minutes (slight exaggeration) for donations.
This is a question I ought to know the answer ro, and I may, but is it true that your bobbies don't carry guns? Even apprehending bad guys?
reply by Tim Margetts on 09-Dec-2024
Yup, our police are not armed, except in very particular circumstances.
Each regional police force has firearms-trained officers who use what are known as ARV's (Armed Response Vehicles).
These will be sent out specifically to respond on the rare occasions there might be an incident involving an armed event. But they also act in the course of their normal duty as unarmed. The firearms are kept locked in a gun safe in the vehicle when not acting in an armed capacity.
Also we have armed officers stationed at places like Airports, Parliament and outside Royal residences. Security within the grounds of Royal Residences is maintained by whichever Army Regiment is on duty and they are obviously armed and highly trained.

well, what if somebody broke into your house when you were there?
reply by Tim Margetts on 09-Dec-2024
What of it? I can use reasonable force if I need to but I have nothing worth stealing and to be honest, if they take my stuff, my insurance will let me replace it with better.
And having armed police roving the streets wouldn't stop someone from getting into my house.
My 3 German Shepherds might though ;-)

reply by the author on 09-Dec-2024
Tim, I meant if they came in and you had a chance to defend yourself before they shot you. Or don't you think they would? and we don't have armed police roving any streets.
Glad you have 3 German Shepherds, however.
reply by Tim Margetts on 09-Dec-2024
With our gun laws, there is such little gun crime the chances are so slim as to be not worth considering.
Last year less than 5% of unlawful deaths were caused by gun-crime.
The most common these days if knife crime, which, especially among teens is becoming a real problem in some areas.
reply by the author on 10-Dec-2024
shudder. I think I'd rather be shot than knifed. (of course, neither sound very enticing :)
reply by Tim Margetts on 10-Dec-2024
And if there were not knives there would be sticks.
Man will always find a way, considering the number two spot for murder in the UK is battery without weapons.
I think the biggest problem I see with guns is, they are removed. Point and pull a trigger, whereas a knife, a fist, or a stick is much more visceral and requires a far different mindset compared with the ease a trigger can be pulled and drop someone in their tracks, in some cases, a considerable distance away.

Jim's just a guy, not "the guy" so where is this going? I'm getting so confused. I'll go back and start over. That's a good thing. My confusion isn't from not being able to follow, but, from wanting it to go how I want it to go. You're one of those talents who can introduce a belly dancer as the protagonist and explain, ever so eloquently, how she shook up the plot.

you do make me laugh! You ought to write clever comedy. no kidding.
If you knew how I'm writing this thing, trying to do a million other things in between, and having to think up plot on the run. I'm not surprised that it's confusing. I'll try to do better.
But Kate started the whole thing when she heard the fracus between Carl and Mildred at lunch, then Carl called somebody and the next thing Mildred was dead, and Kate overheard the whole thing, so then Kate came to the attention of the "baddies." But she started the whole thing as a witness. You know all this. You have read it from the beginning. And as friend to Marilyn, she's still involved, and almost dead.

Unfortunately it seems to happen often in the US, a place that has very liberal laws on gun ownership, but really nowhere else in the western world, no wonder the cops are very nervous, they don't know who's armed and who isn't, an excellent story, lots of personal conflict, beautifully written, blessings Roy

thanks Roy. I appreciate your kind review! I do have to say it's our right to have a gun for protection. I had one until I got arthritis in my hands. So my daughter has it. Now I have bug spray for defense. pathetic. My city, San Antonio, TX has places where gangs from Venezuela have taken up residence, and one is not far from me, which is very scary, especially since I live alone. Have you heard of a burner gun? I may have misspelled it. It doesn't shoot bullets but something that stuns and temporarily stops an invader, giving the home owner time to get out. I haven't tried it as you have to order it, and if I can't pull the trigger I'd have to return it.

The trouble is guns can kill a lot of people very quickly Katherine.
reply by the author on 08-Dec-2024
that's true, but people need protection. Especially now with gang members coming into American cities.
