I totally agree with you 100%. It is the planning, the cooking, the kids running through the house, people bringing unexpected guests, the dog nosing around the turkey scraps. It is all of these things we make memories with. Happy Holidays Karen

I agree with your statement-I think our past ways were best..,

My wife still makes thanksgiving and Christmas special and will as long as she can.

Thanksgiving dinner for five adults and a six year old..,,we ate for days and we still have veggie leftovers.

Great poem Beth,
John

Yeah... it's a totally different world out there now, right? I do miss the old days with a big table (and side tables for the younger ones)... what a cool thing to be at 'the big people table'...! ;) ;) Thanx for sharing and best of luck! ;) Yvette

Thank you, Yvette. I only had room for twelve around the big folks table. I didn't have a choice but to assign some to the kitchen table and it was usually the younger ones.

This is a great entry for the Share a Story in a Poem competition and I can definitely relate. We've had it both ways~when my dad was still with us, we did go out to a restaurant for Thanksgiving and it was nice. But this holiday was one of my mom's specialties and I still like our traditional TG dinner with our favorite dishes. Even though there are only four of us eating and it's a lot of food and work, I still like to have that dinner together at home. I enjoyed your poem very much!

Thank you for the nice review. When you are feeling good the work of preparing the actually fun. If your tired and in pain it feels like eating out would work better.

An excellent poem remembering the times when a Christmas feast was the order and expectation of the day. I remember those days and I am of your opinion that our past ways were best. Nice rhyming pattern and image spot on. Take care and all the best in the competition.

Yes, those past ways were best for that time. But the clean up gets harder and harder as we age. Our son-in-law did the main meat dish even though he's a vegetarian. But it involved so much cleaning before and after! Glad your brood decided to just enjoy being together. Best wishes in the contest!

Thank you, Helen. I'm glad you liked my poem. I didn't miss the work that goes with Thanksgiving. When I was very young I don't my family celebrated Thanksgiving. I think I was eight the first time we started having Thanksgiving. One of president, maybe Truman decided it should be celebrated the last Thursday in November. Before that I could fall on other days.

Your poem is an excellent reminder of how Thanksgivings used to be. Only once did the family choose to go to a restaurant, and I never want to do that again. So much was missing! Thank you.

Beth,
Beth,

This is a lovely poem. I like restaurant cooking sometimes just to break up the monotony of it all. I have two boys and of course mom does all the cooking. I used to like it when we lived in Minnesota. My mother-in-law woud host it at her house and me and my sister-in-law would pitch in. We always had a great time. The guys would watch football and my sister, mother-in law would chit chat. After dinner we would play games. It was a good time for all and a tradition.

Your poem tells a story all the way from beginning to end.

Well done and good luck in the contest.

Cecilia

Yes, there are a lot more eating out than there used to be, but I can remember when I was expensive to eat out, now it is far more reasonable my friend, beautifully written Beth, you are certainly a skilled writer, I can remember when I didn't like writing, until I wrote my first song, then it became interesting, beautifully written Beth, blessings Roy

It is more expensive here now. In the 60's you could get a great meal or $2.00. Now you lucky to get a vegetable plate for less than $20.00. I appreciate the six stars.

Yes, but I only earned $60 a week then.

I agree! I was shattered when my daughter informed me that after being the "turkey queen" for their entire lives, they had decided to do something different, and my efforts were not needed...(Until I received three calls for explanations on recipes). But I started a new tradition and landed in N.C., where the memories were delicious.
Smiles, Carol
