Lordy, Barbara, you really had your hands full, and by yourself, too.
Well, apparently he grew up and made a terrific adult. I'm glad for you that he did! Neat story. Oh, meant to ask, did your husband help when he was home? None of my business, I know. Just wondered if you had any help at all.

To be honest not really. He was gone so often; he didn't really have a great relationship with the boys. He'd only be home a few weeks at a time. When he was, we did do family things. The only child he was home for was our last, he retired when Steven was in high school and was home then. Thank you for the kind review.

Your memories are fun and sad ones to read and to be glad out three boys, who were within four years of each other, were relatively easy to raise compared to your Jeff. Their mother, from our first family, was our Jeff.

This is a great story that illustrates that we have to keep praying, have to keep loving, the people in our family. You didn't give up on him, and in the end, he realized that he was someone precious to you. Maybe that's what sobered him up and made him into what he is today; a father himself. My mother never quit on me either. She prayed and prayed for me for 27 years until I finally got out of the drinking and pot. Hats off to the moms in the world. Including you. estory

Someday, I'll describe the event in Jeff's life that turned him around. Thank you for support.

I think most of us parents have a Geoff among our broods.
Mine is called Luke.
Doesn't stop us from loving them to bits and trying so hard to keep them on the right path.
Mine, now nearly 30 and dad of two beautiful children has at last (I think), decided growing up might be a reasonable idea :)

You did a really good job with this story. It flowed well from beginning to end. You also give us a good idea of your situation at the time. It sounds like Jeff was a few steps ahead while he was growing up. The environment and lack of communication from those in charge at the school didn't help either, as well as dealing with it on your own.You do a good job with the dialogue, as well.
Greg had a good answer to your question, as well as your response to Jeff's complaint that you couldn't withdraw him from school. One question, what is a DODD teacher? It was nice of your parents to offer help. It is amazing how some young people can find all kinds of ways to get around something. I'm sure it is rewarding now to see him thriving with his own business, and also have a lovely family, and will be making you a great grandmother, as well.
I like the comment you thought to yourself when Jeff asked you to take Jace for the summer. You end the story very well. Thanks for sharing it. Hope you had a very nice Thanksgiving, too.

Department of Defense Dependent teacher. They have them for the military families stationed overseas. They have a few in the states, where that state's education system isn't where it should be, so the military kids are punished because their dads are stationed there. Thank you for the kind review.

You are welcome for the review, and thanks for answering my question.

Many years back I read an article In Reader's Digest about parenting problems .The wriiter was a psychologist . He noted that many parents ,during counselling sessions sheepishly admitted that they had given their parents a hard time ..This will go on... in every generation ,I suppose..
But you were a supportive mother, many mothers would have been harsher..

I was a good kid growing up, so I question that logic. Thank you for the kind review.

High intelligence plus ADHD is difficult - one of my grandchildren is in that category. Jeff seems to have turned out well, and now understands the difficulties of parenting! Lol. Great story.

Im assumming DODDS is
Department of Defense Dependents Schools?
Sweet nonfiction about your son Jeff. For me it was my oldest daughter. She is also very intelligent, a bit bipolar, and ADHD.
Children can be challenging at times. Especially teenagers.
Well done, my friend.
Happy Thanksgiving!
His oldest son, Geoffrey will (make be) a great grandma the first of this April.

Yes, you're correct about DODDS. Yes, teenagers can be difficult. I appreciate the kind review.

It's incredible that at the school he was at parent communication wasn't a priority. It does sound as though things did get better with Jeff as he grew older. I think we all learn from our mistakes the older we get. A well written piece, Barbara, I enjoyed reading it.

This is my favorite story so far. I think because you enjoyed him a bit more. My brainy brain is like Jeff's but, because of my illnesses I was restricted a lot of the time. I learned to write and dream. My mom understood me, her mom understood me. I think they both are smarty smarts too. Good writing. loved kit. Karen
