That's cute, elf. I finally stopped by to read your work, although I think I must have reviewed in writing in the past. As for me, have difficulty with rhyme and meter, so I often write free form. As for prose, I try at times but I often struggle with dialogue. Evi

Thank you. I'll have a new story tomorrow. Terry.

Hi Terry,
This is pretty funny but like all good humour pieces, it strikes a chord because it is rooted in a certain reality.
I'd say give scripts a go, though, there's only 10 of them!
I hate the elf on the shelf...
Eventhough, this is posted on the prose side. - should have a space after Even.
All the best

I am giving you a six because you made me laugh and I needed a laugh today. Love your classification of poets especially the great ones in which the reader cannot understand the poem. I am attempting to write more prose but have a difficult time obtaining reviews because of the low money level. This is a humorous essay that is fun to read.

Thanks for the six stars! I was having a little fun, and thank you for reading and enjoying it. Terry.

I get what you are saying. My preference it to write prose and read prose. Of course, it takes a lot longer and that is why I'm so far behind and can't catch up. I also write poetry, but I don't write the kind that leaves you scratching you hear wondering what it meant. I can't stand reading that kind either. The majority of the contests I've won have been for poetry.
I got a great chuckle at your poem. You used Shakespeare and National Enquirer and who Mother Goose as inspiration. Nice start.

Thanks, Beth. I may have to sue Shakespeare, the National Enquirer, and Mother Goose for plagiarism! Terry.

Great post filled with otherworldly, vivid menagerie. (Just trying to fool the AI detector there, but I know you know that). My experience has been that poultry rules, prose drools. At least that's what my cat tells me half the time. Well not my current cat who has never spoken a single word of humanese, but my old cat that actually belonged to my neighbour who never shut up. The cat, not my neighbour.
It's so funny his daughters come over on Halloween and year after year say, "Trick or treat, our cat died at your house." WTF! Is that some kind of new TikTok trend and do they have to announce it to the whole world? For gawd's sake the cat died at the ripe old age of 22 but it is dangerous terrain we old people are traversing these days.
Seriously though, your poem belongs in the esoteric category. I didn't understand a word of it, so you are going to fit right in.
Good to read a post from you. :)

I enjoyed reading this piece, Terry, and I liked your poem, too. I am sorry you are not getting more feedback on your writing. There has been a shift in membership, and as you said, many were prose writers or both prose and poetry. I think one thing that makes a difference is the money prose writers have to put on their story to get is read, although the same thing happens on the poetry side, but eventually the trickle down theory kicks in.
I liked your description of the three kinds of poets. I look forward to your next post, which might be called "How to write a novel in 20 syllables or less", ha, ha.

LOL, I better leave the novelist alone, there are some really good ones here. thanks, Terry.

I think time is the biggest factor in choosing both to write and to read poetry over prose. I've noticed that many FS writers simply don't read longer works. We have a number of very wonderful novelists on this site. Whatever your decision, please keep your humor! Love your attempt at poetry! Carol

Carol, you are right about the novelist. This is mostly a little fun, but a little truth as well. Terry.

LOL~some unpleasant truths have been uncovered here~and I will raise a guilty hand and admit that, after I have reviewed all my fellow~poets' work so I have enough money to enter contests and promote my own work, I will move to the prose offerings. I love to read, but I read 150 books a year for my Goodreads challenge and I've already fallen way behind because I've been focusing so much time on my writing on FanStory (and started going broke purchasing member dollars, so reviewing it is). The surprising thing to me, though I write both poetry and prose, is the success I've had with my prose (when I consider myself primarily a poet). So welcome to the dark side. I like your poetic effort. We do what we gotta do!

There are varying reasons for writing poetry or prose, but the best thing I can think of is one can say a lot in shorter forms, instead of longer prose type, (an inefficient types) I'm although it seems there are only a few that appear to be skilled in all forms, or even one form, mine started out as a songwriter, in which I wrote lyrics and music, I'm not going to crap on, I teach poetry to a few who perhaps may not be great, but they don't want to be great, they want to process their thoughts, You're really only giving vent to your feelings, I don't anymore, does it really matter why people write? Good or bad. It can be therapy. Blessings Roy

Words of wisdom from the number one poet. Thanks, Roy.

I read as many prose writers as poets Terry, there's a fair turnover of writers on FS. You're a good one.

This did make me smile and laugh at the end. I've noticed the same, poetry definitely does get more readers than prose does, and I definitely write more prose than poetry. I thought this was really engaging and I enjoyed reading it.
