Almost all teens are awkward as they try to figure out the world and their place in the world. The best teachers understand that and try to help teens grow. Plus, some teachers don't give students the foundation they need to succeed during their freshman year of college. I enjoyed reading the basic history of world events during the early 1950's.

I think some teachers really shouldn't be teaching at all. Teachers need to be passionate about the subjects they're teaching and need to engage with the kids they are teaching, I think that's what really gets good grades out of students. I had some teachers who I really liked, who I always wanted to do my best for, and others who I hated, and those were the subjects where I suffered. An excellent piece, Beth, I enjoyed reading it.

Thank you, Jacob. I appreciate the review on my story. You are write. Not everyone is a good teacher and if they their subject and can't relate to the students, they shouldn't be teaching.

I always like it when you give us the historical context of these years that you're writing about. I'm sure all of us were awkward in our teens and regretted some interactions. I am impressed that you didn't feel that you need to be married to be successful. It's too bad that your grandmother misunderstood those notes!

Thank you, Helen. I guess the fact my Mom and Dad were always arguing and Dad thought it was his duty to control everything she did that made me not want any part of it. Mom and Dad were together 62 years although she tried to leave twice. When she died, he thought his life was over. He never stopped taking about how much he loved her. He didn't show it when he was young, but they did get closer as thy aged.

I had a few crushes in my youth, but none that really bore any fruit, I was sporty but pretty shy around girls, the only time we really saw girls socially was when there were dances or parties, girls, or at least the girls protected by parents were not seen. Beautifully written Beth, blessings Roy

A lot of boy and girl felt shy and awkward around each other. We didn't realize the other sex was as insecure as we were. I though everyone had it together except me. I appreciate the review.

As always, my lady, your pen is both informative and entertaining -- I HATED my teachers that were coaches because they ALWAYS ended up talking football...ugh! And the 'eyes for the older guy' ... yeah, was never lucky enough to be in class with them, but sure enjoyed looking from afar (it avoided the rabbits and eggs incidents...lol!). So fun and greatly enjoyable, Beth - thanx so much for sharing and 'digging up' some of those old memories not recalled for quite some time! ;) Yvette

More interesting stories about your high school years. I too had a teacher in 9th grade biology who had us keep a notebook of all our notes and drawings. He was similarly into detailed, labeled drawings of the dissections we did, including earthworm, frog, dogfish shark, starfish, and even a fetal pig. I wish I had kept the notebook, because those drawings I did were pretty good. I used different hardness pencils for them.

Thank you, Jim. I really appreciate the review. I always got an A+ on the science notebook with all the drawings and diagrams. I enjoyed doing it and it counted for a third of the grade so It kept my grade for that class high. Other kids hated doing the notebook.

I liked the notebook too. I also used to enjoy doing the drawings. I was never a creative artist, but I could copy pretty well.

Thank you for sharing this memoir with us. I know I've said it before, but I really enjoy reading these.

hose were the classes I found fascinating rather than boring. (You can omit 'rather than boring.' It's redundant.)

He was really nice and I badly wanted to sound intelligent when I could find an occasion to talk to him. (comma after
'nice', you switched subjects.)

A really enjoyable read about life at this time and especially school life - love the candour evident in the tone of the chapter and the political context at the time is fascinating - world events were beginning to speed up and look where we have arrived today!!! everything is going so fast!!

Another eventful year in your life, Beth. I know the younger generation will be shocked that as a teenager, you (and I) had so many "firsts" like colored TV, ballpoint pens, TV dinners, and Disneyland -- all things they think have always been around. And yes - sharing the oops! Did I say that -- rabbits laying eggs? Wonderful!
