I really enjoyed the creativity demonstrated in this piece, and how well it is written. Mystery and suspense flow smoothly through the description of mass reactions to the voter's choice. It is only revealed at the surprising end, what the choices were. Well done. Best wishes in the contest.

This is an excellent poem. I liked the way you contrasted the Roman's vote in the arena and your current vote. Everyone has their own opinion of the election. Just curious who you voted for. Not sure. I didn't vote yet, but I can not vote for Trump. He is just too negative, demeaning and down right mean.

Barbaric. I imagine some big, experienced fighter hovering over someone who did his best and the crowd, caught up in the frenzy, demands his poor soul's life. Like the poor hen who happens to get injured by fence wire - the flock will peck her to death - literally.
I'm a poll worker. In the last general election couples would be asked if they wanted to vote together (completely voiding the secret vote issue). I stopped that practice in my county. How many wives would have the courage shown by your character to declare she wanted to vote secretly, apart from her husband?

I was hooked from the start. I didn't know how the story would go, but I thought the ending was perfect. The scene was a surprise as well. It's not until the last few chapters I realized it's during the Roman Empire?

Oy, are YOU ever going to be on the "Next in Line for the Lion's Den!!" Great story with a fabulous surprise ending. I liked the allegory that went along with the voting in today's society, as well, and how voting for one candidate can lose you friends. Terrific job with this. Good luck to you in the polls. xoxox

I found this story refreshingly different, and very well constructed, with the introduction leading one to think this a modern day story. It is in one way a timeless story, about having the courage to reject peer pressure, the pressure to conform to a husband's expectations, to think for oneself about life, duty, and compassion - and to be willing to stand alone. To me yours is a winner.Congratulations.

This is different. Great post! I don't think I would have liked to live in those Roman times when the Christians were slain by the lions, and their were even worse things going on in the arena, beautifully written, good luck, blessings Roy

After reading your notes and understanding what "pollice verso" means, I understand the context of the Roman times and the horrific entertainment of the Colosseum. I like how you started without any specific context which made me at first think about a narrator who was a housewife in the 1950s. But then as the story progressed, we learn it's a different historical time and yet the vote for choosing compassion is something that we still need to learn to do in this century. Best wishes in the contest!

Thank you so very much! I appreciate your detailed and insightful review and the extra pump up. I hoped, with the election fever going on currently here, that the nonspecific time period in the opening would have people assuming it was a vote in more modern times and see that the voter's thoughts can be applied to many different eras and a vote for compassion can never be wrong.

Your commentary really came through. A certain candidate seems to be entrenched in 1950s America and I can see this happening even today.

I absolutely love this. You have perfectly shown the interior struggle of staying with the status quo or stepping out for change. Change is never comfortable, nor is it easy. You have shown that wonderfully in this piece. The thoughts of being the "good wife" as opposed to being a "true wife" really shows that. I love how you have shown how these people have changed in their quest for physical riches in their treatment of others and their desire to be praised by neighbours (sorry for the "u", I'm Canadian lol). A wonderful and powerful piece that shows the fortitude needed to make a different choice. Well done!

Thank you so very much for this wonderful and insightful review. I am mostly a poet, so when a prose piece is praised I feel especially pleased. I appreciate it.

Our vote is sacred and no one should manipulate us into changing what we think. It sounds like you stood up for yourself here and voting with your emotions, love Dolly x x x
