Esther, you weave your words so well. Thank you for sharing your story. It's a fascinating one. And... I learned my second new word of the day: Hiraeth.

Hiraeth. What a beautiful word, and a poignant story to go along with it. Your memories shared have that quality of being told from the point of view of the child you were. What a blessing you have been able to keep in contact with those who meant so much to you.

A couple suggestions:

Our own world view is unique to us.

Thanks so much for sharing this piece of you!

Julie, thanks so much for the correction. That is what I need desperately as I am trying to write my memories. This writing thing is new for me and I am sure I often make small errors that no one notices. I will be honored any time you read and edit anything of mine...smiles, Esther

What a touching memory. Thanks for sharing it with us, and not many here, if any, could relate. It sounds so frightening! I can't imagine being so isolated from my family, and, yet, I guess that was one of the sacrifices your parents made for their work. You became a unique and better person for it, but it hardly seems fair, at least in the light I'm used to looking through.
Thank you for taking me on this journey with you.
Hugs,
Rhonda

The joy of the reunion reconnecting with my MK siblings amazed me. So many of us have grown into amazing people because of our unique background. Truly a culture of our own.

You've lived an experience that so few can even relate to. And as you say, you're able to go back and still accept them as family after all this time. Thanks for sharing.

Being half welsh, but being raised partly in England and mostly here, in Australia, I'm fascinated by my ancestry of Anglo Saxon and Celtic, my youth and early adulthood was spent being athletically inclined, and from my forties onward was artistically which speaks of the two halves, beautifully written Esther, blessings Roy

I found this to be a very interesting story because your childhood was so different from anything most of us experienced. You gave us a compelling snippet. There is far more to be told about your life in an African boarding school. I look forward to reading more.

Funny I should read this now. I just entered a short poem thinking of my childhood, for a contest. Thank you for sharing your story with us. Your childhood was very different from most of us. But God uses you to richly bless us with a point of view we might never have known.

When we meet, even after 50 years, we are still family. Once we get to heaven, just think, it is an eternity to hear our stories.

What an interesting story. When we are growing up we don't know that everyone isn't raised like us. I was sick and in and out of hospitals. That was normal for me. We accept what is. Oh, we may want to alter it, but it is our life. I was a happy kid. But that is why I always wrote. I couldn't have adventures much in real life, so I made them there. Very good writing. I am sorry I had no sixes left. More, I want more! Karen

God willing, I will write more. Now that I started writing the lid is off the box...who knows. Your story needs to be heard too. Esther

Esther, every story you write about your past seems impossible to this "guarded" mind, but I know it to be true because you wrote it. I can't even begin to fathom how someone so young could learn to survive in such environment, but you did, and so successfully. My heart and prayers are always with you, my friend. I am glad you had the class reunion and could laugh and share memories. I hope this has brought you some peace.
Smiles and hugs, Carol

Esther, I learned more about you reading this piece than I ever knew. It sounds as though you had a rough start - boarding school doesn't sound like a picnic! But, from my understanding, you were sent there for safety from the uprising?

This would make a great longer story - break it down piece by piece beginning with what it was like at home and getting into the daily routine at the school more. We only had a taste of your experience here.

Thanks for sharing that little bit with us. And I learned a new word: hiraeth. Webster's defines it as "a deep longing for something".

Thanks Pam. No, missionaries in many places don't have a school locally. Nine months at school, one month vacation in August, Christmas and Spring. I lived in Congo. Went to school in Kenya. Belonging to a culture of our own makes getting together so precious. Writing and having people here to share with does inspire. Esther
