That's what I love about little girls under five or six years old. You buy them something sparkly or colorful, they are in heaven. One they go to school, they are told by other kids how they shouldn't wear something or even be unique at all. It starts young. Oh to wear a zebra and an sequined shirt with a hot pink tulle skirt and spin around happy to be the center of attention. This was very enlightening. Gretchen

AMEN!! Yes, many women have unrealistic images of themselves and it's because of society. Thank you for sharing this club entry with us and for being real. Young girls/women need more of that.

You have taken a very personal, but very relatable subject for many and expressed it very well. I do not necessarily agree with Lizzo's take on things, but feel she has inspired many to see who they might be. There are many things in my own life I had to rethink, because they led to self doubt and self shaming. The objective I found was to find a balance between what was realistic, and what was true. This is difficult to do because it kept swinging from realistic truths about myself to accepting and even embracing those things I should have changed. But I was able to find a balance. Each path is different, but I assure you God loves us all.

Thank you for sharing about body dysmorphia. When I was in college there was a woman whom all the men were falling for but she was rather plain. What was attractive was her self-confidence in her own beauty. I hope young girls learn to tap into that.

I know women like that, confidence is very attractive in both sixes.

An honest and insightful piece of reflective writing. I too have struggled with some of the issues you mentioned, and a young woman in our street has extreme and life-threatening anorexia. There is still a lot to do to help people with self-acceptance and the strength to refuse to be moulded by pressure from unrealistic social media and reality show pressures. Well written!

Very well-written post, Gypsy. Concise but to the heart of the issue with body acceptance in the face of all the attention paid to the "perfection" to which we are exposed throughout each day on television and social media.

I'm sorry you've suffered the way you have, but I'm glad to read you've grown from the stifling effects of it. That takes real courage and determination. xoxox

I enjoyed your very candid piece here, Gypsy. It's very liberating to express details about ourselves in writing. I remember when I was a teenager feeling angry and perplexed by events and needing to purge those emotions (if you like) on paper. Growing up is difficult enough without suffering the abuse and toxicity of men as you did. The one blessing from that is that it triggered a depth of emotion in you that finds expression in passionate and fulfilling writing. So many great authors, artists and musicians have found themselves on a similar journey. Thank you for sharing, Gypsy. Take care Debbie
