Gerard,
Your poem is so realistic. I have had friends who served in Nam, and they tell me they went into the war as innocents and came back hardened and damaged, like you say in your author's notes.
Great poem,
Best wishes,
Cindy

This is an excellent poem about the impact of war. You have a vivid use of words that creates feelings and emotions. "Through muck and mud I stay alive" is a powerful line that impacts the reader. Your smooth flow of rhyming words adds to the strength of your theme.

That first line is a sensational start to this memoir/poem. Getting an insider's view of the reality of war (not the romanticized version of some movies, nor the statistics of the news) is really gripping and heart breaking. I hate war. I hate that many modern wars are just arrogant leaders using the people they are supposed to lead as chess pieces in a game where only they benefit. It's sickening and I know one day they will answer for it.
Thanks for sharing, and beautifully so, the true story.
Julie

Thank you very much, Julie we all hate war, or we should but like a plague or an earthquake... maybe something named Milton it always seems to fester and spread. It is only afterwards that we read and hear all the remorse and regrets. The human condition perhaps? Thank you Gerard

Yes, war is earth's version of what hell is like, it is as close as we'll come to a living death, it apparently does change, man's concept of a romantic existence vanishes in the blood and mud of life, beautifully written, well done, blessings Roy

For many people it was a harbinger of exactly that. there is dignity and honor there in spite of all of it. But there is no romance. And there never will be nor should there be. warm regards from Gerard.

You brought this war to life here with your memories of it. How soldiers were scarred by this experience and how fruitless this war was and how many suffered. I enjoyed your cleverly chosen words here Gerard, love Dolly x x x

Yes, the memories linger even today, and it has always stayed with me.

It has always stayed with me at some level. I was eyewitness to actual history and you can try to run away from it. But I doubt that you will totally succeed. plus there was no definite decision and there was no real pursuit of victory or a tangible conclusion. Thank you as always! Regards from Gerard.

Wars change us all, but they specifically take a tragic toll on the young men and women who live it and breath it every day, never knowing what the next moment will bring. I salute each and every one of them.

Hi, Carol, yes it certainly does that and it never entirely leaves you . The sights the sounds the reminders in meeting up with others or movies and books. It becomes a lifelong cross and much of the time it, the war in question seldom resolves anything for too long. Thank you and regards from Gerard

The word 'war' should be banned from existence on the earth. Nobody else needs to die, but I know that it's a false hope. What a wonderfully written poem. Best of luck with your writing! Have a great day, and God bless.

It should be but I fear and dread that we or the world or somebody is careening straight towards something much larger and we will all rue the day. I hope not but it is not looking too good. I thank you for commenting and warm regards from Gerard.

I love the imagery of "green locusts whirl and flap". That stood out because you show that you are "a long way from Chicago." Your use of nature and the struggle for survival paints a powerful picture. The rhyme gives this an excellent flow.

Michael, it is becoming a trait of mine that when i post or publish, I am eager to read what you think. I don't usually concede that honor to everyone, but you have proven to be the exception. Warm regards from Gerard

I liked this piece of verse about the war. I wonder if this will be accepted since it is poetry and not prose, but I hope it is. It was wonderfully written. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.

You are right. They disallowed it. But that means that I can save it for another time and another contest. You are concise and compact as always and that is a virtue. Regards from Gerard
