Handsy men have been around as long as people, but it still amazes me how people have a tendency to make excuses or ignore their perversions. It wasn't innocent then, and isn't now, and sadly, more times than not, it's allowed to happen without repercussions. And I don't think it's anything a good old fashioned country-boy butt whopping would fix. But it might have slowed the roll. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Ric. When I was that age, I had no idea how to handle this. Today's kid might not be quite so naive. I know grown women don't have to put up with it like we once did. Men used to be able to get away with more than they can now.

So often, child molestation is done by a family member. I suspect your mother did believe you but preferred to deny it.
I remember several correspondence courses that I tried. So much fun information packed into this chapter. Maybe I'll write about my mail courses.

Thank you, Yes, I think mother believed me. Her half-brother was much older than her. He was married and had kids before she was born so she didn't want to have to confront him. Especially with his wife dying of cancer. She would rather just not think about it.
Thank you so much for the six stars.

What an interesting insight into you growing up. What I find disturbing is how your uncle tried to take advantage of you. And your mum didn't want to know. Fortunately it didn't go any further.
I loved how you started to find your way into the world of art. Hugs, Ulla xcx

Thank you, Ulla. I found having my uncle touch me like that to be very disturbing. I guess my mother didn't want to deal with having to confront her brother so she didn't want to think about it. I avoided getting anywhere near him after that.

I can so understand that. How disgusting men can be!

Hi Beth,
Your story was engaging and well written. You aptly portrayed to feelings you had as an adolescent with a changing body. You had two very scary encounters with older men in your family. That's unfortunate, especially since your mother didn't back you.

I do remember the drawing advertisements, but as I was no so gifted as to even try, I didn't do it. I even remember the one with boy getting sand kicked in his face.

The lead paint part is scary, but it did happen. Just glad you had no permanent damage.

Take care,
Rhonda

Thank you, Rhonda. I enjoyed reading. You're the first to mention remembering the ads. They were in all the papers and magazine back then.

It's funny how times were so much simpler, but scammers seem to be timeless.

I believe I am only a few years younger than you, and vaguely remember many of the events in your stories. I recall pictures in magazines or newspapers of the lady to be drawn.

You were fortunate your parents and grandmom were supportive of the things you were interested in, and purchased art lessons and paint. You were also fortunate to meet your future husband who was also interested in art.

Thank you for the review and your comments. Yes, I was fortunate they supported me on some things but not others. I wanted to take dancing lessons and go out or cheer leading. I didn't get to go to football games or trick or treating so I didn't do everything I wanted to.

Yes, there were the stirrings of both young girls and the awkwardness of boys who didn't know how to handle their feelings, that power of men over women was first manifest with Eve over Adam then of course, Delilah, Deborah, Jezebel, Ruth and Esther, Deborah, Ruth and Esther in a good way, American politics are a little eclectic, then and, ours are little more conservative, beautifully written Beth, blessings Roy

I think I would our elections to be a lot shorter. We have to listen to them put each other down for over a year. Some start when the new person take office. It is crazy. You not filthy rich or not someone who is you don't stand a chance.

Hello Beth. I hope you are enjoying a happy day! Your well-written story is exceptional and a wonderful narrative to read that shines a light on your adolescence and the South that we grew up in so long ago. Times were very different. It's funny, but I have a copy of "All the Kings Men" and picked it up yesterday and began to read it. I got it at an estate sale :). Now, I really want to finish it. Great write!

Thank you, Melissa. I've never read the book, but I've seen the more version of the movie. Thank you for reviewing my story. Things were different back and men felt entitled to do whatever they felt like doing.

This was a fun trip down memory lane, Beth. Some of the things were a little before my time, but not by much. We sure didn't know a lot back then, like about lead paint and asbestos shingles. I used to play with mercury and coated coins with it to make them shiny. We just didn't know.

Pretty shameful of those old men to molest a 12-year-old girl! Some things never change.

Great chapter in your life story.

I really enjoy reading about your memories. I do remember those drawing to send in. I tried it too, and a person came out to see me. I didn't go any further. Something didn't seem right. LOL Thank you for sharing these with us.

Thank you, Barbara, I thought many would remember the ad to draw the girl. It was a pretty good course, and it did encourage me to work in advertising art. The instructors wrote personal letters to help student improve. I liked the hooks that came when you finished an assignment.

That old man knew exactly what he was doing and it is totally unacceptable behaviour to touch a young girls breasts! Also being kissed like that by a relative, it is shameful.

Back then more of this was going on and I was often touched up in the office and no one batted an eyelid. These days, the Police are called and the perpetrator is arrested!

I'm glad you took to art Beth, but that paint sounds dangerous!

Another fine chapter about your early years, love Dolly x x x

Thank you, Dolly. I'm glad it isn't as easy these days for guys to get away with the way they acted in the past. It was the same when I was working to. They got away with despite our objections
