Wow, this, poem is a winner. You hit the nail on the head when you stated the basic understanding of "out of sight, out of mind".
Our hardened hearts don't seem to care
Our thoughts can't face what's over there
This tale is sad; we still repeat.
We tend to let our souls retreat.
From the poems, I read today, this one seems the best and you have such a heart-breaking pictorial to go with it. I wish I had a 6-point for this one.

Well, you already gave me 2 6 pointers. I think that's enough for anybody. But I do think this is one of my best. I seem to be pissing some people off, but that's OK. Thank you so much for your elegant review

If I had a six, I would give it to you for this. I recognized the ship that became "The Ship of Fools" and carried the people back to endure the torture of the German method of cutting down on the population. What a tragic picture you found of another failed attempt to reach freedom. Now our border is a line too many want to cross. Sadly, some of them are prisoners from other countries that were criminals there and still are here.

I'm not sure about that. Carol about criminals coming up here because I believe we do background checks. Sometimes you can't trust everything that's on the news, especially when politicians say it.
it could be true. I'm not saying I know for sure it isn't. I just find it hard to believe because that would be an easy check to do to avoid letting them come here.
I appreciate your thought-provoking review and your excellent rating and your virtual six stars. Thank you for that.

The thing is, if a prison down there is getting rid of their problem people, they probably wouldn't admit it. They do, however, deport a lot of the ones that have come over.

Since your point was obviously to show the US as against the Jewish people, I think it would have been only fair to go deeper into what was happening in the world in the years 1938 to 1941.
The ship was refused US landing after being refused entry into Cuba.
At the time many ships had been denied entry in multiple countries...
This was a horrible period in the world, right before the second world war.
Thousands of people applied to immigrate to the United States, because of what was going on in Germany
and not all were Jewish, and not all were allowed to enter.
Yes the government, under president Franklin D. Roosevelt, did try to negotiate with Cuba, but nothing was done.
Then the president of the decided that the country should abide by the existing quota system.
There was also fear that further involvement, would danger the security of this country, you do realize what was going on in Europe at the time.
Your words appear to insinuate that the United Sates were responsible for those that died after no being allowed entry here.
Perhaps you didn't want to go into all of that, but I recall studying this period of time while in college, and many countries in Europe were also refusing to accept more than a specific number of immigrants.
You seem to forget that this was a terrible period in world history, and the idea of a holocaust certainly wasn't started by the United States not accepting that ship.
It's bad enough that there's negative feeling about All immigrants coming here, I just don't think You were quite fair to this country by the way you described the horror of those 250 deaths.
The problem with the immigration system system didn't just start with Biden, it's been a problem for many years...
While your poem was well written, I believe you left out too much of the story that might have been helpful for those reading...
You said in your notes...
"shame on us"...
When the entire story is told, I'm afraid, I don't agree with you...But of course, you have the right to feel as you do.
The picture of that little child is horrible, and what's so very sad is that the child was only one of many...may God Bless all of them!
Thanks for sharing..

Yes. Bless all of them. I know that Cuba and Canada turn them away. Also, I did say that in my notes and when I said shame on us, I meant the entire world.
I also wondered if maybe somebody thought there were German spies on that ship they probably didn't have as good as they do now.
I respect all of what you said. You went to college to study this and I'm just basing things off the Internet.
Thank you for your thought-provoking review
-
You're very welcome...Yes there was also talk of the possibility that spies may have been on the ship. This was all just before the war...I guess it's all on the internet, but not in one place...I'm afraid of what's going on now in the middle east...It's getting worse, instead of better.
Take Care, and Safe Safe...Hugs,
Victoria

Consequences of action and non action is a stretcher for many. So much said in your piece with a picture that is terribly wrong. Wrong in the sense that it presents the truth of human´s constant challenge of being vigilant of life.

You get my six stars on this moving and so truthful piece. If you haven't read American Dirt or Lost Children Archive, put them on your to-be-read list; they fictionalize the trauma that goes on daily with refugees trying to find a safe space for their kids in this country. Meanwhile, you've done a masterful thing, here, and should be proud of helping to change our nation even a little bit.

I only hope that somebody who didn't always agree with us changes their minds. If I can change only one mind, then I have succeeded because that person may change other minds
Thank you for your wonderful comments and for the shiny stars. They are both very appreciated

I remember the picture of the three-year-old Alan Kurdi, a Syrian refugy boy. It is heartbreaking.
I didn't know we turned away Jewish refugees away, that's horrible.
Well done!

Interesting that you talk about Jesus coming back. I have another poem in the queue about chain migration, and in that poem, it talks about Jesus coming from the south and hitting our southern border. I'll make the rest of mystery until I actually post it. Thank you for your lovely comments and excellent rating

Tragically, this is one of those shameful situations that isn't going away anytime soon as war, fascism, terror and disadvantage turn our world upside down. It seems that any subject raised in the UK can quickly disintegrate into migration and asylum seeking and, instead of any consensus as to how it should be managed, it simply becomes a political football, causing recent rioting on the streets here between opposing factions. Your well-crafted verse and, particularly, your image skilfully capture the tragedy and inhumanity of it all. Great job! Take care Debbie

I remember seeing the photo in the newspapers and on the news. The poor toddler was only three years old. His brother of 5 died too.
The incident with the SS Louis (1939) has been told in a film called "Voyage of the Damned " (1976) which I watched about 20 years ago.
The refugee issue is an ongoing drama. All these wars are making people flee from their homes and countries.
At least 6 million Ukrainians have fled to Europe since the war began in Feb2022.
After the collapse of the global economy during to the pandemic and the war in Ukraine which made the price of gas skyrocket,
People are struggling to make ends meet and they are hostile towards illegals/refugees invading their country.
Our leaders should stop waging wars ( there would be fewer refugees) and invest those billions they are spending on warfare in building instead houses, hospitals, schools, roads etc.

This is heartbreaking. Everyone should have a chance to grow up and succeed in this world, but so many don't get the chance. I hope this piece will open the eyes who need to see.
God bless,

I'm afraid the eyes might still be closed. One man told me that I was very opinionated and that there was no obligation for anyone to help the needy. I shot a reply to him saying it's not a matter of it's a matter of life and death. This guys eyes are closed and I don't think it'll ever open.
Same with one of the ladies on this site. She thinks that they should not let anybody in the country that's not white and she's British. She blames everything that happens on immigrants and people who are citizens but are not like the white people. Right now the tories which is the conservative party of England are rioting in the streets because they're saying they can't get jobs because immigrants take all their jobs Selfish people they've had advantages this whole time that other people didn't have
Anyway thanks for your wonderful comments and your excellent rating

That's unfortunate. The Bible states that we are to love our neighbors. This means the world, not just the one next door. God is drawn to the lowly, trodden-down souls. He's leading by example. Everyone deserves a shot at a great life.
I don't find you opinionated as it reads in the dictionary. We all have opinions, but that doesn't mean that they have to be the same. I feel there are more like-minded folks than not.
God bless,
Steve
