Hello Jessi!

You do so well with these reverse poems. I have never tried one myself, but they are such an incredible way to layer meaning. In fact, it is not layering that you are doing, but mirroring! Maybe that is always the case due to the form, but I would have to try one myself before I could say for sure that the messages are always opposite.

Again, you do an awesome job with your line breaks. They add so much to the rhythm. And with these, you have to make sure they work in both directions!

This is not so much a poem that needs to display a lot of word-play and conventions. The entire form is the convention, and it's certainly enough! These phrases you use -- "Dismiss the rumors that proclaim," "unfounded, are these assertions," and "but a mere facade" -- become the message fulcrums for both directions. It explains while descending that the narrator is okay despite the evidence. It explains while ascending that the narrator is NOT okay despite the evidence. The dichotomous symmetry of these two opposites is so profound to those of us who love precise word-play, where form, language, and convention swirl into a treat for the reader's mind.

Well done, as usual. In my opinion, you are the best poet on FanStory. I am open to seeing a better one, but I haven't yet. Talk to you again soon!

Patrick

Wow! What a cool poem form! I can see why it won Poem of the Month. It's such an interesting topic that you chose, and how the reverse is so much the reverse. I don't normally care for free verse types of poetry, but this is so intriguing!

Hi Jessica.
This is a strong example of this form. I have never heard of it before.
I reminds us that some people hid depression under a mask of happiness
and some are truly happy when they act like it.
Congrats on winning the contest.
Keep writing and stay happy.
Have a good day.
Joan

What I like about this poem, Jessica, is that those individuals who assert that they are outwardly 'okay' may require us to look a bit closer at what might not be immediately visible to the naked eye.

Your poem makes us question whether how a person presents on the outside really mirrors what lies beneath. If we look deeper, might we see that someone really is fine? Or not?
For a first attempt at this form, I think your poem works superbly. The layout and the art serve it well :-)

Congratulations on your nomination! I can't even begin to wrap my head around how you managed to do this. You make me want to try one.
This is brilliantly done. You have crafted a masterpiece with this forward backward poem. Best wishes in the contest!

This is very good. Very very clever. I hope it does not apply to you in any way. I will have to attempt it myself. Let me know if anyone tells you the name. Good writing. Good work. I appreciate your talent. Karen

Thank you so much, Karen; that means a lot. I was able to confirm that it is called a "reverse poem." I have another in the works; however, I'm struggling! lol Thank you for your kind words!

This is super solid for a 'first ever attempt'. It definitely read well both ways.

I wonder how you do this. Do you stray with a theme idea and then work from the ends to the middle?

Fun!

Douglas, I'm so sorry for the late reply. Thank you for this fantastic review. I started writing with the theme in mind and then played with the phrasing and line structure (A LOT) to get it right. lol
