I think I read this story and Lessons in Humility, in the wrong order, but was able to understand the sequence of events. I loved your description of the events celebrating the end of the war. As you reminisce, I enjoy reading of things I too, remember, like library cards where you could see who borrowed a book before you. Chronicling you life experiences is a fabulous idea.

What a great memory. I loved how you described your aunt and uncle's farm and the fun you had with VBS. And how interesting that Jo Ann was able to read as much as you and still be a tomboy. At first, I wondered if she lived in an apartment. It's so interesting how you showed us the end of the second world war from you childhood perspective!

Thank you, Helen, I did love being at my aunt and uncle's farm because they farmed full time. Uncle Harry liked to laugh. He was a lot of fun and Aunt Chris never made a big deal over anything like my mom did. She worked hard but nothing ever seem to bother her. People were always coming over to visit, but she kept right on with whatever she was doing and talked while she worked. She never apologized or make excuses if the house wasn't perfect. I admired that about her.

As your new friend was not quite how you pictured, living in a large house that you all seem to love but she hates, you're learning some important life lessons, like things aren't always what they seem to be or what we imagined them to be. Also, with the war over and your dad losing his job, you learn that you can't get complacent in life because it always seems to change.

Another interesting chapter.

Thank you, Jim. Yes, life is a series of lessons. Change will come so you might as well get used to it. Sometimes it doesn't turn out as badly as you think it might.

This was enjoyable and historic in its talking about the war and your memories about it, what a coincidence to finally meet the girl who took out the books,

Thank you, Joann. Yes, I spent the rest of my school days in the same class with her.

The early dawn before first light is a magical time Beth, how lovely that you were up and exploring the farm at this time. I was born after the war had ended and have no recollection of war, but I did play in my Grandmother's air raid shelter every time we visited. You have such vivid memories of your youth Beth and I enjoy your posts filled with interesting information of your childhood, a joy to read, love Dolly x x x

Thank you Dolly, I really appreciate all the comment. We didn't have any bombs fall so we didn't have an air raid shelter. I played in my grandmother potato house. LOL.

These old stories, we'll say reminiscing stories, I find extremely interesting.

Partly the details of your story and the manner or voice I'm getting in my head while reading are spot on.

I enjoy your storytelling.

John

Thank you, John. I like remembering these things. When I start to write about them, things I'd forgotten come to mind. I'm so glad you like my stories.

This work has reached the exceptional level

I think I laid a good foundation for writing when I was young, I preferred to play sport with friend, but my second choice was reading, I learned what a great form of escape that was, taking me to places I could only imagine, I was good at languages, but not good at subjects that didn't interest me, I had working class parents who didn't have a high regard for education, their parents sent them out work as soo as possible, although both, on reflection were very gifted, beautifully written, blessings Roy,

Thank you Roy. I really appreciate your comments and the six stars. My mother especially expected me to go to college. I'm not sure dad cared. I don't remember him mentioning it.

Hopefully this is not a foreshadowing. "It didn't seem to occur to anyone that standing up in a fast-moving vehicle might not be safe. It would be years before seat belts were standard equipment or until laws designed to promote safety came into being."
what a terrible concept for a little third grader to have to absorb: "It was horrifying listening to the reports as they came in about the death toll in those two Japanese cities." this sounds like a foreshadowing: "Dad did get another job working at a feed and seed store. This was not my dad's dream job, and it wouldn't end well." I'll have to get to this one.

Thank you Liz. No, I sure people much have gotten hurt that way but no one I knew did. My late husband told me he once jumped for a fast moving car when he was standing on the running board and got the wind knocked out of him. That wasn't smart.

That's written in my autobiography when I was six or seven I jumped off the running board of a little pickup truck, and the tire went on over my knee. My mother had to come and get me and take me to the next town over to the hospital and then they had to do surgery to drain my knee

This was one of those stories I wished would never come to an end. I'm glad there will be more coming. This was such a great tale of your childhood in the war and post-war years, some Hollywood Producer should latch onto this for a great big-budget movie.

this is very well written about your life in 1945. That was a timeframe when I was living as well. In September that year, my youngest sister was born on 6 September. I don't remember a lot about that time in my life though. Have a wonderful day. This is well written and your structure is very good. Patricia.
