Poor Momma, she lost the love of her life and married a horrible man. That explains why the father hates Dewey so much.

I wonder if Huck's father raped Miss Lynn.

Well done!

Miss Lynn might not be Matthew's target. Thanks so much for this. Gretchen

Hello Gretchen,
in all honesty, I think this could be a made for TV movie. The way you paint the scenes is so believable. I never would have thought that Huck's mother's secret was her pregnancy. One has to wonder if Dewey's father left of his own accord or if he might be buried somewhere in a remote location. This is great gal. Keep up the good work.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

Just keep in mind, Hucks mother said life is full of secrets. There might be another secret that will come to light soon. Thank you for this. Gretchen

What a messed up family. If one man hadn't been a coward and left, Dewey might be a normal young man. Life might have been different for all of them. Unfortunately, what ifs never solve problems. Huck has a good but dangerous idea to follow his father. Good writing, no problems found.

Gretchen,
I'm glad I stumbled upon this well/written chapter.
What a terrible secret mamma is carrying.
Also She didn't get to marry the man she really loved.
Note: should the dialogue be; "what did(nt) she marry him?
I also loved the description of fall--the smell of burning leaves, etc. Autumn is my favorite time of year.
Excellent chapter, Gretchen.
Best Wishes,
Cindy

I knew Matthew was after Miss Lynn. Now Huck feels it's his responsibility to protect her. That's not good, well it is good, but dangerous. I am curious who is Dewey's father and did Matthew kill him??? Love the story.

After we get through with chores, I leave Dewey outside while I fetch some water for us. (Few words, After we finish with chores,)

It is more than interesting to learn that Huck and Dewey are only half brothers, but will Huck be able to keep this secret? Such secrets have a way of slipping out.

The following confused me:
"Who was he? Dewey's father, I mean."

She looks up with eyes tired and solemn. "He was the love of my life."

"Why did you marry him, though?"

I think there is a problem between the use of positives and negatives. kay
