When children are young and trying to figure the world out, they often get things wrong. Many adults haven't figured out religion, as you've demonstrated with the actions of both your mother and father. Hopefully, the little Catholic boy moved to a location where there were other Catholics.

This was very well done and it gave us a chance to see some of your history. Publishing your life here is a brave thing to do. I am doing mine here also. Some of them I write as stories because I've had so many people tell me that they don't believe me.
Your friend Knowledge.

I guess I forget what a convoluted life and brain teasing goes on when we are young. Parents tend to argue over issues often enough to make it seem like we are teetering on the brink of disaster. Your folks' feelings and actions seem familiar, though perhaps a bit stronger than mine in Michigan.

Thank Bill, Yes, parents don't seem to be aware that kids might be getting stressed out about what is going on with them. I didn't talk about it and I'll bet most kids don't.

Interesting to see your memories about religious dissension in the home and community. Strange that your mother took her own track and didn't try to take you with her. Funny about the cousin who was also a member.

Take care,
Rhonda

Thank you Rhonda. I was young and I'm thankful that she didn't push anything on me but I sure she was hoping at some point I seen things her way.

Another good one, Beth! Just got my electricity and water back about thirty minutes ago and here I am. LOL I've been going stark raving mad. Now I need to catch up and see if I can even write that story.
Love ya, Carol

Thank you Carol. I appreciate the review and I'm so you've got you power back. One hot summer a few years ago I was without power for a week due to a tornado.

Yes, ma'am, people have no idea what sticks in a child's mind and might alter their thoughts and visions forever. Most start remembering back before anyone ever thought they could. Thanks for sharing.

It is a little strange that kids have these fears but usually keep them to themselves not knowing how to express them. If their parents knew, they might be able to help them deal with them better.

I think you're right, often parents have no clue what's going on in the children's little minds. I enjoyed reading. Religion can cause problems. I've seen it happen myself. This is a good write.

Thank you Barbara. I'm sure our own children see their lives from a different perspective than we do, and we aren't likely to know what they are thinking.

Being brought up in the Catholic Church I cannot recall at any time the Bible being used at all. I do recall the book we used was The St. Joseph Epistle. Peculiar, since I don;t recall Joe being an apostle. Just saying.

Thank you Tom. There was time the Catholic church discouraged people from the reading the Bible thinking it was better to let the clergy tell you what was said, because you wouldn't be capable of understanding it.

That sounds scary indeed. I'd have been equally nervous had I heard such threats from my dad. I love your compassion as a kid, seeing how the Baptist majority was bullying the one Catholic kid. What a traumatic experience for the poor guy. You never did say what denomination your mother changed to. Somehow I thought it might be Seventh Day Adventist? I love the strength of your mom when it came to matters of importance!

Yes, it was Adventist. Mom and Dad had never heard of that church before she joined it and to Dad he was convinced it was some heather cult. Actually in later life, he joined it himself and started going to church with her. She managed to start a small church in Newton before she died. There were actually some black people who joined and they became good friends with them.

That's cool! I knew your mom just needed more contact with people of other colors. I found Adventists to be so strict about some rules - about not cooking on Sunday and no jewelry etc. I had a boss who was Adventist and she envied everyone's wedding rings. She kept Lipton tea in her medicine cabinet. I felt sorry that she felt she had to keep so many laws when Christ fulfilled all those laws for us.

Some offsuoot groups seem to make up their own rules. Those aren't something that are required of Adventists. I can't imagine what the tea was about. Their aren't any rules different from anyone else except that smoking and drinking isn't healthy. You much have met an offshoot group. I've met a few of those. They do recommend that you follow the health rules about clean and unclean food. Christ's sacafice didn't change the way our bodies are designed and most Adventist that follow them live a lot longer. Their main difference is they feel the Sabbath was never changes and it is still the seventh day rather the the first day.

Okay! That makes sense. So your mom's group wasn't mostly focused on Ellen G White's writings? That's the part I remember the most. My boss said she couldn't have any caffeine but if her stomach hurt, she'd drink Lipton tea - always kept in the medicine cabinet. 😊

Adventist are focused on the BIble. God used Ellan White in her Day, but she didn't added anything to what was in the BIble. She did give advice to people of her day, but she didn't add any rules to anything. Her books are worth reading but they don't add anything to the Bible. She never expected anyone to take anything extra from her that wasn't already in the Bible. Ellan White didn't drick tea
like Lipton and she didn't think Lipton tea

that what was in regular tea wasn't good for you. She did drink hebal teas. I don't like tea but I like coffee. Cafieine isn't good for you but there are no rules aganist it.

Oh, the lady I knew was terribly law-driven. It seemed like she didn't know at all about the freedom we have in Christ. Glad you weren't affected by that particular offshoot!

Suspicions of other religions is born out of fear Beth, people don't like change. In England we have had many wars over religion in the past and it has resulted in many of us being private about our beliefs, a fine post full of historic rebellion, love Dolly x

Thank you Dolly. You are right. People tend to fear change. Religion has caused a lot of misunderstanding over the years.
