Hi, prettybluebirds

This looks like a good entry for the contest. Good luck with that!!

I do not like how horses smell. My mother loved horses. But, one day a horse threw her. , and she hit her head, and after that she wasn't allowed on horses, and that really depressed her. She thought it was unfair. Maybe get rid of the horse or just put it out to pasture

For me, it's cats. I love cats. And, maybe other people can smell them, but I can't. Litter box is a lot easier to clean than a horse.Stall

I enjoyed reading your story

Good job. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you. I can't count how many times my butt hit the ground, but I still loved my horses while I had them. I am with you on the cat thing. I Had six until February, when my beloved Blossom died; she was twenty-two. I still have two who are fifteen, two who are twelve, and my baby, Skeezix, is seven. I'm a confirmed cat person.

Another beautifully expressed story from you. The read is fluent, clear and evocative. I particularly like the second paragraph with the essence of your memory in vivid, descriptive detail. A strong contender. Well done and good luck! Debbie

This was great, and Im certain that made an impression on you at that young age, the anticipation, the sensory part and the satisfaction. I would love to hear more stories.

Thank you for reading and commenting. I do more writing in the winter. I spend most of my time outside working in the yard in the summer.

Beautifully told.
the jingle of harness and clip-clop of horse's hooves -- could literally hear it inside my mind. Amazing work.

The whole piece is a fantastic homage to a cherished memory. Thank you dearly for sharing.

What a lovely Memory. I find smells help us remember things better. Don't you find that is true?
This is very well written. I enjoyed the nostalgia.

Thank you. Yes, smell has a lot to do with what we remember. Every time I smell wood smoke, I think of home.

I don't think I can remember anything before the age of five. It's interesting that you're early memory seems to be centred around the sense of smell, often said to be our strongest sense.

An excellent entry. How exciting it must have been to greet your father and ride a horse. Maybe it was the highpoint of your father's day as well.
Some people have the gift of accessing memories. Obviously you are one.

Best of luck in the contest! I hope this post does well.

This is a really nice, evocative story in which one can feel the emotions. What a lovely early memory to cherish. It was well written, as well. Good job!

Well done. Those memories are so important in shaping the rest of our lives. Most of us are lucky those first memories are good ones, and it is so important we give the same to our children. The world needs more good memories. Thank you for sharing yours. They brighten my day. Stay well and good luck in the contest.

Very well written. This is a very nice contest entry. I hope it fares well.
1949 is quite a bit later than my grandparents switched to tractors. You must have been pretty remotely rural.
Best wishes.

Thank you. My father was old-fashioned and hated to give up his beloved horses. He finally had to so he could keep up with his growing farm. We had wood for heat and cooking, too. That only changed after my father passed away, and one of my brothers purchased an electric stove for mother, and put in a furnace.
