Loved this little story. Family stories are so fun, especially when you can share them before they pass on and you can't laugh together anymore. Is he still Denis the menace? Or did he settle down? My hubby has some of those mischief genes. Esther

Hi Esther, Denny's mischief genes did finally catch up with him. He married, had two boys who treasured him. The marriage didn't work out as Denny was always a bit of a big kid inside.

Anyway, Denny lived with my dad after the divorce and one night during a blizzard, my dad told him to stay in town and not come home, but we wouldn't listen. He got on the freeway and started for my dad's home, the visibility was so bad he ran into a tow truck pulling a woman out of the ditch and the arm of the truck went right thru Denny's windshield and broke his neck. The highway patrol said he lived long enough to say he could hear his (our) mom calling him home. He was 47.

Two years later to almost the date, his eighteen year old son was on his way home from work at his mom's supper club and fell asleep and hit a tree and was killed instantly. He was a senior in high school and was about as good of a kid as I have even known.
So that is why you yanked so strong on my heartstrings with the death of your granddaughter.
Thanks so much for finding this and then coming back and reviewing it.
You are so amazingly sweet. Lotsa love and hugs. Debi

That's a story that Denny will never live down! Guess being ring bearer helped to make up for it all. Ah, little brothers! Thank you for sharing and congratulations on the win!!

Dennis sounded like a little stinker, lol. His antics ruined a good date, but you're right about one thing. This was a funny story to tell. Glad they didn't hold a grudge, and he was in their wedding. I really like biographical stories. Lets me see another side of the wonderful friends on this site. Gretchen

LOL, Gretchen, I have a feeling if Pat would have gotten upset and taken it out on Barb's five year old brother, she might have broken off the engagement. Like I said, she spoiled him rotten.

Even when he crashed his car during a blizzard on the freeway at age 47 and was killed, Barb took it the hardest. And yet, they had been thru tragedy too as their 13 year old daughter died of leukemia. So it was good we had the fun memories to laugh about, because they help you get through the other stuff.

Thanks, my wonderful friend for such a lovely review and such kind words. You are such a special friend. Love, Debi

Hi Debi, this was a fun story to retell, and I am sure that the memories are as vivid today as they were back then. Of special note:

and just as they were kissing in the front seat, up popped my mischievous little five-year-old brother and said "Excuse me, but you're blocking my view."

(Hey, you guys can kiss all that you want--just don't block my view.)

A fun story. Do you remember which movie they went to see? Xo. M

Hi Sis, I have a feeling if Pat would have gotten upset and taken it out on Barb's five year old brother, she might have broken off the engagement. Like I said, she spoiled him rotten. Another thing about him that you don't know about us but we did a skit where we lip synced to the Chipmunks. We had a whole act going, where my brother Ron was David Seville, Greg was Simon and I was Theodore and Denny was Alvin. And we worked hard on this act and did it all over the place. So Denny at six was able to really show an attitude and do the OoooKaaayyee. Plus had all the smarty moves down and we won competitions all over with it. But he made a great Alvin too.

And you remember that his charming luck ran out when he crashed his car during a blizzard on the freeway at age 47 and was killed, Barb took it the hardest. And yet, they had been thru tragedy too as their 13 year old daughter died of leukemia. So it was good we had the fun memories to laugh about, because they help you get through the other stuff.

Thanks my Sweet SOTU for such a lovely review and such kind words. You are such a special sis. Love, Debi

I was just curious if you remember what movie they went to see?
reply by the author on 06-Jul-2024
You know I think I knew that at one time, but I don't remember. Something makes me want to say Dr Zhivago, but not even sure what year that was out.
reply by LateBloomer on 06-Jul-2024
That was a long movie. Lots of time for kissing. Big-teeth smile.

Debi,

Congrats on winning the True Humor Flash Contest. You've penned a great story about how pesky little 5 year old brothers can interrupt a special memorable moment. The humor is implied and quite apropos in the scenario presented.

All the best,

Eugene

Oh, this was such a cute family story. I'm surprised little Denny wasn't bothered by the lovy-dovy activities of his sister and her boyfriend, but just wanted to watch the movie. Glad it all worked out at the end. Did Denny get some popcorn, though? Congrats on the win.

Thanks so very much, and I appreciate the awesome comments for this story. Actually I think the movie was Dr Zhivago, so they missed a bunch of it so went back the next night. Without Denny! No, he didn't care that they were kissing, but wanted to watch the movie. No popcorn for the naughty boy. LOL.
Thanks for the congrats too, my friend. Debi

Well, Miss Debi, you really have quite a family, with many fun, wonderful stories remembered about each of them, I'm sure.
This is a cute - and you're right - Dennis the Menace type story about your little brother. I bet you have lots of stories about him and the rest of your siblings!
Congratulations on All Time Best once again!
Hope you're doing well.
Katharine

Hi Debbie,
Your story is endearing and vividly portrays a snapshot of family life in 1965. I find it engaging with well-developed characters, specifically Denny, through their actions and relationships.

I found the opening sentence is quite long and could be broken up for clarity, maybe adding a period after 'our family'.

There some details, such as Pat's connection to Germany and France, while interesting, does nothing for the story.

These are minor issues, and the story remains engaging and enjoyable to read. - Terry

You see, I was denied all that as I am the baby of the family. I do have a cousin four years younger than me. Actually, three years and 364 days younger than me. His birthday is April first, mine is April second. I was the ringleader until he reached his teens, he grew several inches taller than me. We were holy terrors until they split us up. We would not see each other until I was discharged from the Air Force several years later. He is deceased now and not only did this break my heart, but for whatever reason his wife left my name and any mention of me out of his obit and his funeral program.

I am sorry Nomi, but I am having one of these days, but are you talking about not having the chance to stow away with your little cousin? Because I bet that would have been something to see you doing that with your little cousin. Would you have gotten into a lot of trouble. I can't remember how much if any my brother got into as he was pretty little and spoiled so bad.
Sorry about not being included in your cousins funeral.

We did something far worse. There was a third cousin who was an instigator. He would bring us matches and then run home and snitch on us. We lived in the South during that time and after getting us in trouble for about the fifth time, we lured him into the woods and tied him to a tree and left him there. We got the beating of our lives for that. Years later he came down with polio and he swore that it was the crying he did while abandoned in the woods that made him so weak that polio overtook him. Yes, we were wrong, but we cured him of snitching.

I'm sorry but that is hilarious. You should have joined the contest. Sorry, I don't know if that is possible to get polio from crying so hard but the way you told the story is so funny. Sorry, I am not laughing at you, but I am laughing because I am picturing you as that bad boy, and it makes me smile. You are delightful dear bro. I am so glad that you shared that with me,

Me and cousin John my April cohort had two uncles that used to get arrested almost ever Saturday night for carousing. My grandmother would bail tehm out in time for work on Monday. I would always ask John what kind of bird does not fly. He would pause and look up as if thinking, then he suddenly grt and we would then say in unison, A JAILBIRD! Laughing crazily we would then be chased by our uncles until they ran out of breath. We were really two bad boys.

This is a really cute story. I've had stow aways in my car when kids didn't want to be left behind. I even did that myself to my dad once when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure my husband and I owned that same car once, color and all.

Haha, Beth, I think I like your story better than mine. That is so funny that even you stowed away. I don'l remember but I don't think I did. However, Denny was the baby and he was witty, charming and cute so he got by with everything.
Thanks for the very kind comments for my story about Denny. By the way, someone told me that the car that I was thinking of was a 56 Chevy, not a 59. I just remembered what it looked like, but I got the picture from Pinterest.

I don't even know if my sister and brother in-law have a picture of it anymore.
Thanks again, dear friend for the awesome review and kind comments.
    Love, Debi
