Hi Prettybluebirds.
This is a well written story with a great ending. I like it when crooks can be so stupid to leave such evidence behind. I would hope that the sheriff would donate some of the meat to the poor. The men are right when they say that anyone who does things like this are the scum of the earth.
Congrats on winning the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Enjoy the rest of the week.

Thank you. The thieves were teenage boys with no money, so my husband let them haul hay all summer to pay for damages. I think they might have preferred jail time, lol.

    You're welcome, PBB
I think you husband had a good method of community service for the cow community they destroyed. In jail there would be less labor and 3 meals.

I love this story. I'm so glad the perpetrators were apprehended. I didn't see any typos, but I was so absorbed in the story, I may have missed them. It is so funny sometimes how justice is meted out. God works in mysterious ways, and this short piece demonstrates that.

This story about an attack on dairy cows reads very well. My grandfather was a sheep rancher, and this reminds me that there is more than one kind of low-down coyote or wolf, with human features. I am glad the culprits had to make restitution. I wish we had that in place for everyone who breaks laws, with real work that goes back to benefitting the victims.

Thank you. We often needed help with theives because we were too spread out. That time, we got a lucky break.

Thank you for the seven-star rating. I'm glad you liked the story. It turned out to be two teenage boys. They had no money, so my husband let them work off the damages by hauling hay. It was hot and hard work, and I bet they thought twice before they tried something like that again.

Life holds many surprises and some of them are not the ones we hope to encounter. Those poor animals! The depravity of some people is beyond understanding.

I am glad you were able to insert a spot of brightness here at the end.

God truly does work in mysterious ways and we are honoring Him by knowing that He is always watching over us even though we do not yet understand the way that a lot of things happen. Thank you for sharing your story.

That was so well written. I felt the feelings, anger and frustration and even the chuckles at the end. Those poor cows. I am sorry you lost your hubby but sounds like your memories are sweet. Bless you in your writing. I also am retiring and hoping to write (at very least) my memoirs. I hope you can take some time to read some of my offerings. Esther.

Thank you for reading and the six stars. This was one time we came out on top. We had a lot of troubles with rustlers over the years.

What a roller coaster of emotions! I'm so sorry for this terrible loss...and yet that jacket turned this around from tragedy to justice served!

I do believe God does have a sense of humor...

(Also, those teens didn't have a lick of sense!)

Hah!

If I were them I would have been begging to be put into custody before your husband could get his hands on them!

Thank you. The teens had no money, so they had to do jail time or work it off. Des put them to work hauling hay under the hot summer sun. I think they might have preferred jail time. Lol.

As hot as it's been around here for the past week, I think I would prefer jail time...and I'm not hauling hay!

Wow!!! I was horrified as I read this shocking story. I am so sorry I don't have a six to rate this as it deserves, but I sure am glad that it ended well, although those poor animals -- I hope the thieves were severely punished.

Thanks for reading and commenting. It turned out to be two teenage boys. They must have gotten scared because they must have been there for some time, which is why the forgot the jacket.

Sometimes you see unexpected death. This excellent recall brings back another time.
It is reminiscent of days on a farm as a young boy. The bane of our existence were the predators that attacked our chickens at night. The hens knew enough to sleep in the hen house, safe from the weasels, skunks, foxes, coyotes and the stray dogs dumped in the countryside by uncaring town folk. You couldn't always keep them safe though. Even with a fence and closed door, they could dig under the fence and sometimes work the door open, chewing away the wood to make an entrance. A commotion in the hen house brought my father on the run with a shotgun and flashlight. Once a skunk broke through the fence and worked the door open. It killed every one it could catch before being killed by a shotgun blast. Oh miseries as the hen house now reeked with the skunk's odorous discharge. My job was take a long handled shovel with the skunk's body held as far away as possible into the adjacent field, then bury it the next morning. The skunk had killed ten chickens. and was eating one before it was killed.

Pretty, that was a pretty gruesome picture you painted. Because judgment is not always executed speedily, some people turn from God. But, I'm glad you saw the guilty convicted. I truly hate the thought of butchering poor defenseless animals.

Thank you. We had a lot of trouble with thieves because our farms were spread out, and we couldn't always watch everything. This was a highly unusual incident.

I guess I have too much of a heart sometimes. I just can't stand animals being hurt.
