Hi Bruce,
This is a good story that tells life goes full circle.
Wow, that is a pretty heavy subject to be reading about at 10;
The pandemic changed all of our lives in some way.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Congrats on placing third in the contest.
Have a great rest of the week.
Joan

Congratulations on placing in the contest. That experience might have been enough for you to turn vegetarian or vegan. Cleverly constructed shortie.

Blessings, Julia

Talking about a way to curb an appetite, but after tasting Nutra down in Louisiana, the thought of rat might be a little more tasty sounding. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

I understand because I've heard tales of poor Oriental refugees in this country killing cats and dogs from meat and I have a problem eating meat in a Oriental restaurant. I am amazed that this would have been a choice for a ten year old as a first book to read. Good luck in the contest.

Ah, now the dilemma . . . is it chicken or is it rat? Or is it a stray cat found prowling the alley outside the kitchen of the restaurant?

Interesting because it's true, clever because of the comparison to a different kind of prison we were all in.

You were in a tough place to be held a POP - restrictions were much tighter there than in the States.

I like this, Bruce. Good luck in the contest.

Perfectly told, from my point of view. I need to go on to 150 characters to write a decent review, so I could philosophize about how the past governs the present, but it's better the way you told it!

What a powerful book to have read at age 10. You must have been very advanced. I bet it was horrible when it came back to haunt you. And what a choice. Go hungry or 'choke over your dinner'. Well written true flash. kay

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. I am pretty sure after that memory popped up I would not have been eating that chicken. LOL I enjoyed reading. You have all the required elements of a short story. Good luck with the contest.

Ugh! I feel sick already! And did you eat it? Nicely structured so that the two paragraphs link together, not least by the reference to 'prisoner.' How those childhood stories remain in our imagination, often for a lifetime! Food and cooking an ongoing theme in your posts, always a gratifying read. Well done and good luck! Debbie

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Ahhhh, yes! How literature can impact our lives forever, right, Bruce?

This was very well done. You sucked us in with thinking, "Oh, look at this little bibliophile! Age ten, reading that book, and remembering it still today!" Then you bludgeoned us with the reason WHY.

I repeat: HAHAHAHAHAA.

Very memorable read. Gross, of course, but memorable...and now we will ALLLLLLLLL associate Chinese chicken takeout with this story. Thanks a lot, Bud...xoxo
