I think I went to one when I was about that age. We used the oujia board. I felt someone yanking the plinth back and forth. Not even creepy, just fake. Me and someone else used a Oujia board later and did not ask the questions out loud. It worked very well. Odd Isn't it? Karen

"She had an aura about her ; not good, but evil." And you still agreed to attend??
"I saw the curtains slowly open" Hopefully, it was just one of her hidden stooges playing their part to make the thing appear real. Either way, good for you for getting the hell outta there quickly!

Firstly, congrats, Brenda on winning the 2-5-2 contest! Then, I can really relate to this flash fiction because I attended a seance at a slightly younger age than you. And I don't believe in ghosts either. But, with my sister and cousin, we experienced the presence of Dick Turpin (a highway man) and a witch who recounted to us all the ingredients of her magic cauldron. And I swear none of us were moving the glass which spun around quite furiously. You were right to leave the room! I wouldn't have stuck around with Maryann! Great theme for the contest. Thank you so much for congratulating me. Also, for the great review. Maryann's entire family was involved with the occult. I think her mom was a witch. I think that stuff is dangerous and scary. They were creepy people, evil.

This is appropriate for me since I went to a medium for a reading today. No curtains moved and it was a stuffy room with sixteen people, but, strangely, she said the same thing my nurse sister said. We could not have stopped our beautiful boy at 33 from killing himself. Maybe there really is something about this occult stuff. Your medium at least looked like one. Mine looked like the waitress she had once been before a death experience. You did a good job telling your story with those 100 words.

It is difficult to tell a story in so few words, but you managed to tell enough that the reader can envision what took place. I would have done exactly what you did at the seance...bolted. Great story. Best wishes in the contest.

The way you describe this, I would have bolted out the door too. As you described in your notes, this was when you were 13, so perhaps this was a staged scenario for you to freak out to. As you mentioned, Maryann had an evil aura, so she may have set you up.
