I had to Google it and got "beer here"? I figured she said something like "come to bed".

I remember once being on the operating table and wanting badly to say, "I changed my mind, let me off." None of us like being there.

I'm sure you do have some stories. My husband's sister was an ER nurse in Atlanta for years; she used to tell us tales over Thanksgiving dinner and everyone at the table would laugh until they were crying!

I'm sure you have lots of stories, Esther.

Hello Esther,
No doubt you have a plethora of stories to share. Tales of the OR. It would probably make a good book. I can't imagine some of the things you've seen. I'm leery of being put under anesthesia for the reason you mentioned. As a patient, we assume the doctors will treat us with the upmost respect, but as a human being, I'm sure there are things said or done that would appall us. Thanks for sharing.
Blessings,
Tom

The most important things to being a great writer is openness and honestly. Complete honesty, the good, the bad, and the embarrassing, as was told to me by Pulitzer Prize winning author, playwright, and academy award nominated actor Sam Shepard. So, give us the whole dirty truth. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

I understand about the need for humor in the workplace. There'll be times when some of our battered women were talking about something and we just had to start laughing. It wasn't really funny from most people's perspective but it was funny from ours. And I guess when we had psychotic patients where I worked most recently, some of the stuff they said or the way they reacted to something was also funny. Like some lost total track of reality and they were talking about wanting to go upstairs to get something from their wife. Number one, there was no upstairs & two the wife was not there.

My second son is mentally ill. So many times looking back we can laugh. One time the nurse tried to put the arm band on my husband (my son had gone to the restroom). Delusions cycle. Never works to try to argue him out of them.

My brother is also mentally ill and head injured so you can just imagine the tangle that goes on or that business.

So the last patient was asking for beer from the pretty doctor? That's very odd. The anesthesia was probably really strong! Thanks for sharing these funny vignettes from your nursing days! You could have created each of these as a dribble or flash fiction story. (50 to 150 words)

No, the doctor told him to put his "beer" here instead of his cabesa (head). That is a good idea. Just shorties. I tend to write too much.

Very good. Reminds me of the closed doors of The Teachers' Room when I taught. Only my stories were not as cute or funny. One of them resulted in the blackballing of a cleaning lady who had been in a concentration camp. I fictionalized this in a post awhile back.

I read that one. I have a whole lot of stories that are not cute or funny either.

I'd rather be in rooms with an open door!

This was a fun piece. I look forward to reading more! My aunt is a nurse, and I know she has seen some weird things over the years. I imagine being an OR nurse is even weirder. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.
