The depth of the things that Heddy is learning will drive her into adulthood sooner than normal, and the sweetness of the child is so refreshing, it would be nice to see it in this day and age, beautifully written Gretchen, blessings Roy

Heddy is becoming a young woman as she is forced to understand her brother's fears and accept the fact that Artie is safe as long as she keeps him a secret. Unfortunately, she may have made a mistake telling Lester about Artie.

Thank you, Carol. I'm hoping Lester can keep the secret. Thanks for this great review. Gretchen

Heddy is in a bad spot but not of her own doing. Yes, Willis may not think to highly of Artie if he learns about him. I really enjoy reading this story. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Hello Gretchen,
I had to catch up on the previous chapters you wrote while I was gone. All of them were excellent. It's good to see that Willis is home, and understandably is struggling with the issues of war. It was pretty bold of Heddy to kiss Lester. The stirrings of young love. It's going to be interesting to see what develops with Artie and Willis both being on the island at the same time. Well done. Happy Mother's Day gal.

Thank you, Tom, for both the awesome review and rating and the Mother's Day wishes. Did you make it down to the outer banks? Gretchen

    Hi Gretchen,
yes we did. We picked up our friend in Vermont and took him down to Hatteras and ended up spending several nights there. Parts of it reminded me of the Key West, though the keys don't have sand dunes. I was shocked at the amount of fish that is there. I wish I could have gone fishing while we were there. Our hosts blessed us with some fresh shrimp and red drum for dinner that first night. It was delightful. We visited the light house, but it had scaffolding completely surrounding it because they were getting ready to repair and paint it. We stopped in at the museum there and saw pictures of how they moved the lighthouse back from the edge of the ocean some fifteen hundred feet. What a task that was. The weather was nice, though a little humid. If I lived down there, I'd have to have a boat, I'm sure. It sounds like they have some of the same issues that we had in Hoonah, lots of tourists and no hospital close by. Its a lovely place to visit, but I doubt we'll ever make the trip again. The traffic going down was horrific. Fortunately, we were able to avoid the big cities on the way back.

Heddy has a wise head on her young shoulders. Sometimes a lie is necessary, as in this case. Heddy also has a kind heart, she sees good in most people. I liked what Artie told her, that Willis will slowly get better once he knows he is truly safe with his family again. War is such a horrible thing for everyone. It's bound to change you.

I had to smile when Heddy asked for the eggy bread and tomatoes, that is Graham's (my husband) favourite! How weird is that? LOL.

Another lovely chapter, so true to life for an ordinary family, living in the troubled world of war. Well done, my talented friend. :)) Sandra xx

Awe. Thank you so much. Heddy is a combination of my old next door neighbor and me. Some of her temper flare ups and "that's not fair!" attitudes are from me. I said that a lot, growing up. Lol. I'm so glad you liked this chapter. Happy Mother's day! Gretchen

I can imagine that. Lol. I've started reading Missing the other Alex. It's great. Sad, but again, you get into your characters soul. xx

Ten years ago, I was all into family drama. I loved to try to figure out how different characters would react to the same trigger. Now I like simpler stories. But always love a happy ending.

I love this story. You bring those timer of WWII to life so nickly even though they were way before your time. Heddy is just an likable little girl so wise for her years.

I used to listen to my mom and my neighbor talk about those times. They were a special generation, one that sadly is disappearing. They weren't perfect but there is no denying that they stepped up to every challenge. Thank you for this. Gretchen

This is a wonderful friendship that crosses all those social boundaries and caution is on both sides in order to protect. Heady is learning about how scarred people an be through war and it is the ordinary citizens who suffer, their are no winners or losers. A sensitive post Gretchen, always well delivered, hopeful and understanding, love Dolly x x x

Thank you, Dolly. I feel bad for Artie. Hiding from both sides in essence. I appreciate this awesome understanding and the sixth star. Gretchen

Heddy is very wise for her age. She got her mother's kind heart. I like her friendship with Artie... I think she is his only friend. I bet he has some demons of his own.

I feel bad for Willis, poor thing, war has a way of changing people. Soldiers are brainwashed to become killers and after the war they send them home without the tools to recover.

I love your story. You are such outstanding writer.

Such a lovely story. Worthy of a six. You write with such ease and such a natural flow. And your insights as to relationships are subtly shared through each of your characters and their believable interactions. An enjoyable read, as always.

You always come up with some of the best lines that stick in this readers head for a while. I seriously like, "Lies are like marsh muck, the more you tell them, the deeper you sink." LOL. Thanks for sharing.
