Hi Jim, so they are working against the clock. I certainly hope the get that patent through before Warren does.
Also, the police didn't think the theft had that much importance.
It's a great story. Ulla:)))

Thanks so much, Ulla. As you can tell from the next chapter, Alan lost the race, but all is not lost yet. Hopefully he can minimize the loss, but it will take some good breaks from now on.

This gives an insight into the complexities of inventing and setting up a patent. I found you moved this process along and still made it an interesting read, Jim.
Well done,
Cheers

I appreciate that, Valda. Discussing patent law without putting the readers to sleep was a bit of a challenge. I'm glad you found some interest in it.

It seems the backing the drive up and having a hidden camera should help to prove it is your work and not that of the thief. I don't see how he could sell it quickly unless the buyer would be someone who would a knowlege of how valuable this could be. I'll be looking forward to seeing how this plays out. Nicely written.

Thanks, Beth. You're right; I think without the backup and the video, it might be rather difficult to prove IP theft. It's a tricky area.

Hopefully he will be an attorney of integrity. Getting a patent seems very complex and the theft of intellectual property even more so. Very well written.

Wouldn't it be terrible after all that's happened to also hire a dishonest patent lawyer? Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

This whole business of patenting is not that straight-forward and took quite a lot of research to get right. It seems a shame there's not a lot you can do when you don't have a patent yet and someone steals your idea.

Although the theft of these important inventions to Alan, their theft wouldn't be particularly important to the police and may settle on the bottom shelf of priorities, although all theft, and indeed lies are sin to God to be dealt with accordingly, beautifully written Jim, once again your research is outstanding, well done, blessings Roy

Thanks, Roy. That research came at a small price. I had to actually pay for some online legal advice from an actual patent lawyer to get answers to the scenario in this story. It wasn't very much, so I didn't mind spending it, but I couldn't find the answers I needed through my own research.

I like the final name Alan chose for his reading device. The name tells you exactly what the device is. I enjoyed the explanation of the reasons for a provisional patent and difference between a civil and criminal law suit. I learned from watching the TV show "Shark Tank," you always keep your patent and only license the usage rights.

Warren doesn't seem like the type of guy who would go through the patent process or put up the necessary funds. But we'll see.

I'm kind of partial to the first name, but perhaps the second one is better after all. : )

Good suspicions about Warren. There are other ways to make money from his theft.

Agreed... Talking Textacles would be very easy to abuse. Glad the name was changed, but it did give me a smile when reading.

Hopefully the two days it took Alan to complete the application didn't hinder his chance of being first before Warren. But then that could be a good story..,

We'll have to wait and see.

Cheers,
John

Yeah, might have come across as a gag gift like you'd find at Spencer's.

The race is on now to get that patent application in first.

I worked for Spencer?s Corporate for about 10 years as Inventory Control Manager, many, many years ago..,

I'll bet that was fun getting to see all those gag gifts!

This is a well written chapter, and Alan is going and doing just what a nice guy like Alan would do. It is good that your main character is staying true to form. It does raise a few questions about target audience, but it may too late for that.

Good luck going forward.

Yep, I think it's too late. It is what it is. That being said, we've got a few twists coming up that will be a little different.

I've come to realize that the audience for my stories is right here and among my friends and family. I write the stories I enjoy and no longer care too much about what the wider reading trends might be and the popular likes and dislikes are among the wider reading public.

I doubt I will even attempt to find an agent for professional publication of anything anymore (no luck so far for my golf stories) or even bother with self-publishing because I have no social media presence and can't help promote my own stuff anyway, which is a must if you want any kind of readership.

As you've pointed out many times, my stuff probably has a somewhat narrow appeal. But that's okay with me because I'm not in this to make a living, but mainly just to entertain myself, and if I can share it with a few friends who also enjoy it, I'll call it good.

I always welcome your input, Lance, and have made many changes to my stories based on your suggestions and critiques.

Alan/David is well on his way for a patent. I do hope he gets it before Warren has a chance do it. Although, he may not it himself, but sell the idea for money. I do like this story.

Harold Carmody was a small, bookish-looking fellow of perhaps 60. (great description. We all know what that is.)

The race is on. The first one who files the provisional patent, if it is accepted, will be the one to get patent pending status and will get the full patent when it is submitted, again, assuming it is accepted. Important to be first to establish that earliest date.

I sure learned a lot about US Patent procedures when reading this! You must have spent a good chunk of time researching it all.
Talking Textacles! At least my spellchecker had the decency to suggest 'tentacles' LOL

It's interesting about the research for this chapter. I was having a hard time finding the information I needed for the situation Alan found himself in. So, I went to a website where you can ask legal questions and get answers from real lawyers at a fairly nominal price. I ended up having an online chat with an attorney, and I got to ask him the exact questions I needed answers for. I told him it was research for a novel. That didn't matter to him. It was an interesting chat.
