This is very real sounding: "when I was a young woman, we had a colored man who lived in the village. He did odd jobs, was friendly and everyone liked him. We let him be. Then one night someone got stabbed, right there in town. Everybody turned on him. He swore he didn't hurt anyone, but some of the men in town, well, they didn't believe him." Nonni looks away, worry in her eyes. "I'm just saying, things might not be so good for your friend Artie if it gets out that he's a German hiding out on the island." This is great: "I blow a piece of hair up in frustration." This kid is intense, Good job. Now I've got another good story of yours to catch up on

That story is going to give Heddy nightmares. I know that did that, and moer, to the poor black men. It's awful what a different colour than yourself can do to a person. Arti is in danger, because I think Lester will tell someone soon. That would be awful. Awful for Arti, and for Heddy.

I clean my windows with vinager and water and dry them with newspapers. They come up streak free and shiny. The stuff you spray on from the shops, is useless! This is another excellent chapter, my friend. Well done! :)) Sandra xx

Vinegar and water is the only way to clean glass. I will confess to papertowels but only the woven kind. No lint. Lol. Thank you so much for this wonderful review. And I'm thrilled you found it good enough for the extra star. Gretchen

It seems that letting Artie's identity out of the bag wouldn't be good for Artie, Heddy, or Lester's friendship should he be the one to spill the beans.

Best, JohnC

I think Lester is trust worthy but Artie might not be able to hide forever. Gretchen

Hello Gretchen,
wow, you really covered a whole range of subjects here. Having Nonni tell Heddy about the hanging was an eye opener. It will be interesting to see if she can convince Lester to keep her secret.
I found that nothing cleans windows better than vinegar and water, and wiping them dry with newspapers. Paper towels and rags don't work nearly as good. I use a squeegee though. Another great episode gal.
Have a blessed day.
Tom

I used to clean cottages and nothing gets rid of the salty slime on beachfront windows like vinegar and water. And a squeegee is awesome. Cuts the time spent in half. Thank you for this. Gretchen

What an ending! After all the business of cleaning, of newspapers and vinegar, then to have this vision of a man hanging from a tree. Whether it is now real or in Heddy's imagination, it doesn't much matter. She'll find this a difficult concept with which to reconcile herself. Once again, a well constructed story, using some beautiful imagery of the setting to contrast with the brutal realities of life. I like the way you blend the salt of the sea on the window pane with the vinegar of the cleaning process. Very skilfully done. Take care Debbie

All this window cleaning work make me tired. It sounds like a lot of work for a little girl. Heddy is very obedient child and one that is very concernred for those she cares about. Being a realist, I want to believe she has a great imagination, but it seem Nonni tells her about things from her past she has never toldf her before so I had assume Nonni is real. She doesn't tell her mother about her visits with Nonni so It seems she has a very strong sense of what she needs to tell and what she needs to keep to herself.

Heddy has a lot on her mind. Lester could very easily put Artie in danger. I am curious how she's going to solve this problem. I'm sure she will, she's an intelligent little girl and our heroine. I like this story, a lot.

Good story. I know you have a lot on your plate with this story. I hope it perks up a bit. I have a feeling that if people picked on anyone Heddy new she would scream and holler until she got their attention. :-)

This is a terrifying situation for a young girl to comprehend. When people are scared they do crazy things and then regret it later. I have heard of the random hangings in the past in your country and it is frightening. Even in a civilised society, people have crazy thoughts. It has been a long time since I heard of cleaning windows with vinegar and newspaper and this reminded me of my Grandma who had all sorts of old fashioned remedies to clean things with. As always, your work is a pleasure to read, a skilful write, I felt I was there in the story witnessing everything, love Dolly x

Thank you. Your comments mean a lot. My grandmother yelled at me one time for using the expensive paper towels to wipe the windows. Lol. Glad you could picture everything. Gretchen

Goodness! I hope that Heddy is just imagining this because of her fear that people will turn on Artie! That was definitely a cliff hanger, and I'm hoping you'll write the next chapter soon! Sorry I am out of sixes.

Thank you, Wendy. Let me know what you think when you finish. It was her imagination. She has a lot on her mind. None of it particularly good. Gretchen
