Lol. I knew an old man who used those same words when asked if he noticed a woman a very long cut blouse. ("not dead yet!")
It's good that Allen was able to make peace and ironically, old Harold actually liked the ferns - when planted in the right place!
Congratulations on your second place win!

An excellent entry for the Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood contest. I am getting a kick out of these stories of neighborly affection lol This one was no different. You were so patient. I'm afraid I would have handled it quite differently lol Nicely done. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you, Marilyn, for all the kudos. This story was fun to write since Harold is one of a kind.

I enjoyed the clear and detailed descriptions included in this delightful "Beautiful Day" contest entry. I could clearly envision Harold Toomey. Your story developed smoothly with realistic dialogue and a satisfying ending. Best wishes in the contest.

What a wonderful warm and friendly story. Not sure if it is fiction, but you wrote Harold up so very believable.

The extra step often fixes neighbor issues.

Nice writing author!

Thanks, Doug, for the great review. The story is basically true regarding those ferns.

What excellent dialogue! I was right there in the vegetable garden with the two of them! So pleased Allen stopped Harold from committing herbicide..or fernicide perhaps. Your compelling little story evolved very credibly with a very satisfying ending. Well done and good luck! Debbie

Ciao mystery poet, you now have 4 votes.

I dont have a green thumb, I managed to kill my mother's ficus elastica...

It was doing so well in my parents' bedroom ( they were living in Spain for some years then).

Anyway, I decided to give it some liquid fertiliser but I got the dosage wrong.

The following morning I opened the shutters and to my dismay, all the shiny, oily leaves were drooping. I burnt the roots. (sigh) It was more than a metre high, I salvaged only one leaf with a stem.

Sorry for the rant.

I love ferns, they are easy to care for at least those outside. I love to see the bright green/yellow shoots unfurl, they are very decorative in a garden

Only one furn adapted to indoor life. That too was in my parents' room because our cats were hot on getting their paws on any plant or flower that entered the house.

Good thing the old cantankerous veteran came around in the end.

I also love tomatoes, love to pick them straight off the plant and pop them in my mouth, the juice running down my chin.

I can commiserate with your plant loss. It seems I am always replacing house plants I killed. Many thanks, tempeste, for your comments and your vote.

I enjoyed this story, as it came to a happy conclusion with everyone satisfied - a great example of the art of keeping the peace and negotiating. Sending best wishes for your entry in the contest.

Ferns and Hosta do make the garden beautiful. These plants will multiply and grow and grow wherever you have an opening for them. The nature of this story is green plants.

For some reason, plants don't understand the concept of property lines! Good thing he didn't use round-up that would travel to the roots and kill all the original ones too. Good story, with compromise and cooler heads prevailing, a satisfactory ending was achieved. Good entry for the contest! Julie

Heh hey, don't you just love it, I'm old, but not dead, ogling his neighbour's wife, what a man, I think all of us would like to be just as 'fit' as Harold. Must have been a firecracker in his day. Beautifully written, blessings Roy
