Greed gets you nothing real. People still have not learned this. If you earn something by your own hard work, the long lasting feeling cannot be matched by simply taking from another. I was mad you killed off Ben. I deprived myself of your good writing. :-)

    LOL. (killing Ben)
Curious - did you read any of the Tony story? There were lots of ben references.
We're going to get back to Ben shortly.
Thank you for your great review.

I didn't like the tony stories they just made me miss Ben. It is weird how we can get so attached to the characters. :-)

That's the way I felt about Gus and Newt in Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove and the sequel.
reply by Karen Cherry Threadgill on 11-Apr-2024
Yes, newt went his own way, and losing gus was heart wrenching, but I enjoyed all the sequels probably because I read them first. :-)

McMurtry killed Newt on page 2. Telling in and not even showing it - and he was dead.

I don't remember that. Yuckity Yuck.

This is a good beginning to another exciting tale. Ben's skill is going to be tested as he tries to save the old man from his injuries. With God on his side, there is no doubt he'll save him.

Thank you. This takes us back to very early in the Ben Persons tale.

This was a pretty bloody chapter. It look like these two would be thieves killed each other. I wonder how all of this is going to figure into young Ben's calling.

Good question - young Ben Paul.
Keep in mind that in the prologue I warned that Slim would be the protagonist at first. And... that it would be quite different from the Ben and Tony segments. (smiley face here)
    Thank you for your review.

Fun beginning to this new tale about Ben Paul. Loved Slim's name (Herschell Diddleknopper). I also loved the behavior of the two claim jumpers. Reminded me of orcs in Tolkien's LOTR and the way they behave toward each other.

We also get a nice introduction to Ben's character. This was very interesting. - Jim

Hah! Yes, I didn't think of the orcs, but you are right!
Thank you for your fun review.

The name Slim Diddleknopper takes me back to one of my favorite Red Skelton characters called "Clem Kadiddlehopper. Fine characters are the secret to all stories. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. I loved Red Skelton: Freddie the Freeeloader, Clem, and Sheriff Deadeye.
I thought diddleknopper had to do with wool-knapping, but now I've forgotten and can't find it on the internet. Oh, well. Keepin' it anyway!

I think its a great name. And besides, we are the minority of those who remember Red Skelton.

Their greed was their downfall. They had no scruples about shooting Slim, now have turned on each other. It will be interesting to see where this goes for Slim now he has met Ben.

A very exciting chapter, Wayne. Your narrative is authentic and engaging. It drew me in from the first sentence and carried through to the ending. I'm glad to have gotten in at the beginning, as I said before. I will try and keep up, lol.

Have a great Sunday,
Rhonda

Hope I read the next chapter when I have a six! I love all things west, have a hugemongous b-western collection, with a's and TV shows. Saturdays are "Cowboy Days" with me. Did you get the Diddleknopper name from Clem Kadiddlehopper? Where would the Old West be without claim jumpers and bodies thrown off cliffs?

Hah! And bad guys who kill each other?
    I loved Red Skelton.
No, I just put noises together. I just now tried looking it up, believing it really did have something to do with wool, but I don't find anything. Hmmm? Too long ago. (more than ten minutes) smiley face here

Diddleknopper, lol! That's a mouth full! You introduced him as Slim Diddleknopper, but call him Slim Goldman and Herschell Diddleknopper in author's notes.

Is this a bit of backstory on Ben that we didn't get in the first book? I didn't read it from the beginning, so I appreciate the backstory, and it's probably good for those who did not follow that series of posts.

You said there'd be lots of action in the first chapter - you weren't kidding.

Nicely told, Wayne.

    Thank you immensely!
Ben made up the name Goldman to admit him into the sanitarium. Ben didn't know his real name.

It's a great idea to break this one up. And I guess we had to go back in time first so we can follow how Ben Persons influenced Slim's life and the change in his life after meeting God through Ben. I wonder if he will meet Ben Paul.
