This excellent story reveals a lot about human nature. The fears we have, especially as children, can rule our thinking and bring on unwanted consequences.

This present world is not the same one I was born into in the mid-1940s. So much of the peace that prospered following WWII has disappeared.

The discord now being experienced worldwide is enough to keep anyone awake.

We do hear so much of these unfortunates' travails. Sadly, the only solution is to sacrifice the potential existence of numbers of future generations. Indira Ghandi forcibly sterilized all males with two or more children. You wrote feelingly of an empathetic individual who could examine this problem and devise a workable premise as a possible solution. Nicely done, indeed. Live long and write well, Fantasist

Such an emotional piece, William. How powerful one meager slice of bread can be ~ to ease the past trauma of hunger and insecurity. I'm not sure I've come across your work before. I'll rectify that by becoming a fan, as soon as I've said congratulations on your soon-to-be-released book!

Where will it be available? Please share!

Me too. I review a lot, but was out of commission for a bit. I've posted maybe 6 or 7 this year...

Very nice. The bottom rung of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, physiological needs. Too many people, especially refugees, live at this level, and children suffer the most. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I couldn't find anything to critique. Well done.

Oh, Bill, you're breaking my heart with this one -- well, actually, I guess they all do, but this one is especially poignant for me as I picture each child clinging to that slice of bread...

I'm out of sixes, my friend, but this certainly deserves one. What mental imagery in your flawless recounting of the story!

I've never gone hungry so I have no idea what these children were going through. But my heart aches for children who go hungry. Or live in filth, or have no running water. This was very interesting. Gretchen

Lack of sufficient supplies for comfortable survival, threatens both children and adults. Unemployment, homelessness, inadequate housing and hunger are just a few things that threaten adult security. However, your well-written post on the effects of hunger on children is thought-provoking and sad. Thank you for sharing this information. I wish you much success with your book.

This story, When Bread is Enough, shows a bit of proof about the power of positivity even when it is a piece of bread. The sense of it all comes out strongly, and makes an argument for the idea of eternal security.

This piece is very well written. Good, error-free writing.
I don't think I would have ever come up with the idea to tell the kids 'not' to eat the bread. I would have thought that waking up and eating it would resolve their issues.
Best wishes.

It's a wonderful behavior modification tool. I've used it often when kids feel anxiety and fear the unknown.
