This is definitely a mix of creepy with comforting to the mother. Unfortunately, horror stories with children tend to be really grotesque, so I may be even inadvertently reading that into your poem. But with the mother being sad with the loss of her husband and child, it definitely could be a bittersweet, touching moment.
