I've seen this cartoon and read it a few times. He was always with Helga when I saw it. I had no idea it had heen used by so many for anvertizing purposes. I wish I'd read something about these cartoon earlier when I was getting a daily paper. I might have appreciated them more.

I know Hagar is one of my favorites, but I had no idea he was used for so many sales gigs and had tv shows. Now I wonder what his voice sounds like in those. Very interesting article and loading with a lot of good info.

I remember Hagar the Horrible from my childhood and found your background information fascinating. Anyone who can get away with one bath a year is bound to attract the admiration of a youngster!

I remember my dad chuckling at Hagar and his disgruntled antics. I enjoy reading about the basis for these cartoon characters. As a writer, there is always research even for fictional characters. I enjoyed this piece very much. Gretchen

Thank you so much for sharing this, Brett. I've obviously never heard of the comic strip as I grew up in Denmark. The only thing that confused me was the name Hamlet popping up. He was a Danish prince of Shakespeare's creation nothing to do with the Scandinavian Vikings. I should know, Lol. Ulla:)))

Hello Brett,
I always enjoyed reading Hagar back when we had a newspaper. As with the other comic strips you've written about, you've gone to a lot of work to bring all the info to the forefront. Well done.
Have a blessed evening.

I like this trip down memory lane with a refresher course in comic strips that have shaped most of our lives. And I just noticed that Dennis the Menace was written by Hank Ketchum, a last name I've never heard much, and started wondering if maybe he was kin to Jack Ketchum the horror writer Stephen King described as the scariest writer in America. It's always a pleasure, thanks for sharing.

No relation. Here is some info you may enjoy about the 4-time Bram Stoker Award, and World Horror Convention Grand Master, Jack Ketchum. He was born Dallas William Mayr and Jack Ketchum was one of his two pen names. The other one he wrote his Short Fiction under was Jerzy Livingston. His most famous Short Fiction was called Broken On The Wheel Of Sex. Among Long Fiction he wrote Right To Life, The Lost, Closing Time, Off Season, its sequel Offspring, The Girl Next Door, Red, The Woman, a collection of poetry known as Notes From The Cat House, and a collection of Plays called Triptych. Much appreciate the review.

What does Hagar the Horrible have to do with King Kong? I loved Hagar, he was one of my favorites. I also loved Calvin and Hobbs, and Doonesbury. I am eclectic. Good research. Karen
