I actually understood that one, Gypsy. And it was a fun one, it went perfectly with the picture! Lol. I then read your author's notes, is there a difference in the American Haikus and those written in the UK? It was this line that made me wonder: because English syllables are longer than Japanese syllables.... Writing poetry over the years I've found that many times some have said my syllable count was out, but it wasn't in UK rhyme. It just made me wonder. I'm going to try my hand at haikus this coming week. Can I PM you with it before I post it?

I enjoyed reading yours, and the picture was perfect for it. :)) Love and hugs, my friend, Sandra xx

Yes, please, you can always message me if you have questions about haiku or if you want to send me a draft and look it over before you post it. I can make suggestions and give you the information you may need. I usually add links where you can find more information too.

    Concerning syllables:

Japanese don't use syllables, they use 'on' sounds, which are much shorter than English syllables sound. For example....

    a HAIKU IN JAPANESE:

    Furu ike ya
    kawazu tobikomu
    mizu no oto

    Fu/ru i/ke ya ( 5 on)
    ka/wa/zu to/bi/ko/mu (7 on)
    mi/zu no o/to (5 on)

    SAME HAIKU TRANSLATED TO ENGLISH

    old pond (2 syllables)
frogs jumped in ? (3 syllables)
    sound of water (4 syllables)

*famous haiku by Matsuo Basho, the first haiku master from the 17th century

Thank you very much, Sandra, it's good to hear from you.

Another fine poem, Gypsy, and as a former letter carrier one that I shared his panic. Constantly having to watch for unknown dogs. We weren't supposed to get out of our delivery truck if there was a dog loose.

LOL I couldn't help but laugh at this poem. When I was growing up, we had a Great Dane, a gigantic dog. Duke was the kindest, gentlest dog you could ever meet, unless you were the mailman. For real. When it was about time for the mailman to come, we put Duke in the basement. He would jump through the picture window to get the mailman. Never knew why he hated the man, but he did. Thank you for sharing.

Haha. This was funny. I was talking to a friend who is a UPS driver. He's been working for UPS for 23 years. He's been bitten by dogs a total of 39 times. I feel for the mail carriers and delivery men. Great haiku. Gretchen

Oh the poor postal carrier! We had guests tonight and they told us about their son who was briefly a mail carrier and a pit bull lunged at him and bit his face! So hearing that story and reading this poem on the same night makes me cringe! Ack!

What a fun Haiku for a cute picture. I like the humor in this poem. I wish the font could be larger. Thanks a lot for sharing. You made me laugh.

Well done.

I changed the font size. I wrote the poem on my phone so I didn't notice.

For some reason known only by postmen and dogs, dogs really seem to hate these poor, arrive winter and summer, hardworking men. Beautifully written Gypsy, blessings Roy

This is so cut and funny! I am visual so I enjoy the words and image together. This is excellent writing for the challenge! Good syllable counts and descriptions. This is also relatable to readers. Excellent image!

Best wishes as always,

Alexan
