A man of his word, but not much conscience since he knew he was leaving a man stranded in the desert to die a cruel death. That's gangsters in a nutshell. He followed his code of honor even if it's not the same as a good person. Good luck in the contest.

This is an excellent flash story for the contest with a good surprise ending.
Morale: never trust a gangster. Of course, John could have taken the gun and
suddenly turn and kill Orlando.
