Very nice artwork and information to go with it, Ulla. You have a very good opening paragraph,
followed by your experience as a new writer on the site. You make a good point about being a family here, helping each other, and giving back. Don't just take advice, but give help when you can is a good idea, as well as saying thank you for the help. That goes a long way in my opinion.
I like your positive ending about becoming a better writer but also making friends, and you let them know that it can happen to them, as well. Well done, my friend.

Thank you so much, Pam, for your review and lovely stars. I'm so glad your share my views about the site. You're the first to know how much all the help has paid off. Saying thank you is so important! Ulla xx

Very good article, Ulla. English is my first language, and I still struggle with it from time to time. You are right about friends. I have made many here.

This section in the Fanstory book, Advice to New Fanstorians, Writing on Fanstory, shows a lot that the common American nebver realizes. The ability to write to the world. We send out text to Australia, Spain, England and all over this country. Good things happen.

"...but life on this community works a little bit differently from the real world." should be "...but life (in) this community works a little bit differently from the real world.
Nicely done, Ulla. :))

This is a very inspiring message, Ulla, with some great advice, particularly in regard to replying to reviews. It is irritating when you've gone to the trouble to review somebody with a very thoughtful and helpful review, only to never hear back from them.
It's always good to acknowledge and thank a person for a review, especially a critical one, and, even if you don't agree with the advice given and have no intention of following it, offer your appreciation for their effort in giving you advice. - Jim

You certainly have made major strides in your writing, Ulla, and I have to take my hat off to you for writing in a language that doesn't come naturally to you. I know how hard that is by my experiences when I lived in Spain for 11 years. It's not easy. You are an excellent example of that, and it must inspire newbies a lot. I enjoyed reading your advice for newbies, but it is also good for old-timers, too. :)) Well done, my dear friend. Love and hugs, Sandra xxx

You are right. We all can profit by constructive and helpful feedback which should be offered with respect and acknowledged with thanks. I have often spent considerable time on reviewing with suggestions offered repectfully but then have been ignored, which is disappointing.

Great tips for newbies and for folks like me, kicking around since 2007!
A very few make it clear they are not interested in suggestions...
I'll respect their request, but skip reviewing if the post is riddled in errors.
97% at least, in my experience, are eager to share what works and what can be improved...
Respect and tone count for a lot!
I may blush at a silly error--but I'm always thankful when a FS member points it out!

Absolutely, I'm always glad to be corrected and open to suggestions. Thank you so much, Karenina. Ulla xcx

Being open is what helps each of us to grow. If we adopt a defensive posture, we're doomed to keep making the same errors ~ something you CLEARLY do not do as your work is most impressive!
Comment from Gloria ....
This is an excellent addition to the book, Ulla. Everything you mention is correct, and especially the part about suggestions and edits.
I've always been impressed with the fact that you write English so well, even though it is a second language for you.
Well done. :)

This is a pleasant encouraging view of Fanstory. You are right that it doesn't work like the real world. Some people aren't polite and don't review when I review their work, but I suppose I have missed reviewing some that have reviewed my work.
