I agree with what you wrote. I remember having a bad time when I first got here. I followed the rules on reviewing, giving mostly fours, and boy did I get backlash. I learned quickly. Your advice is right on the money. Karen

Yes, FanStory rules don't go along with what the writers decided and we all got backlash in the beginning. We all feel great when we see a star by our working showing something decided it was worth six stars and then someone give is a 4 and our star disappears.

Some people love to nitpick. I thank them, correct when necessary and go about my day. I am so bad at dialogue grammarb I am thinking about getting Grammarly. Karen :-)

You have give some excellent information in Chapter 2 that I hope many new members will take advantage of...plus established members since we some times tend to forget things. At least, I think we do...at my age, I cannot exactly recall. :0) (Note -- This is an example of humor, which can often be beneficial for some writings.)

Thanks so much for this advice, Beth. The main takeaway for me here was the view ratings button, which I've never noticed before! I will pay more attention now! Thanks for the share and I hope this will improve people's experience of the site.

I agree with you, particularly about being happy to be further down the rankings so long as you can take pride in your work. I will be posting less frequently this year, as I will be focussing on Jonathan's story, which I am sure won't have widespread appeal, so I will definitely slip down. But I refuse to play the game of posting any old thing just to stay at the top. To me quality is more important than anything else.
Thanks for sharing your very relevant thoughts.

This is all really good advice for Newbies Beth. I personally read all work that has been promoted, even when the reward is very low. And I also read work from skilled poets when they have not promoted their work. I am glad you posted this for the Newbies, I hope they read it and take your advice, it is very good, love Dolly x x x

Thank you Dolly, I read all the work that has been promote too, not matter the amount if I can get to it while it is still on the listing and I'm not seriously running behind.

These are great tips, Beth! I like that you give specific advice like choose the Treasure Certificate to make sure it's stays for at least three days. And good idea to always promote!

Thank you Helen. Your advice was helpful and there were a few other things I had to learn along the way.

One of the dilemmas I experience on FS is a recognized writing. It seems, either a writer has a large fan base or the writing has been highly placed in the promotion queue. The 'recognition' can cause some confusion in regard to quality of the read versus the quantity of the read. Without investigation, I suspect many authors are often recognized by virtue of their fan base. It's the nature of the beast.

I guess it happens. I don't want to be recognized, so I have about stopped entering contest on the member sites, and have gone to the free FanStory contests, where I have no idea who reads them. I seem to be having better luck with them anyway. Thanks for the review.

I like your suggestions. The higher you promote your work the more reviews you will receive. I so agree with you that if you get on the first page for a listing, it's better for you, too.

Beth.
Very nicely composed. You provided valid points to the new writers on the site and possibly a point of reference or reminder to veterans.
All in all well worth the read as far I am concerned.
Hmm... two stars? Maybe three.... Fours a stretch!
Hah...just kidding around!
Well worth it.

Thank you. I would be fine if they did away with the rating system because 6 stars are the only things that mean anything and we only get 6 of them. I appreciate the review.

Great job, Beth! I'm learning as much as anyone between you and Helen thus far. I suspected "banners" didn't do anything, but you've confirmed it's not a good expenditure. I do skim prior reviews before I write. It's enlightening to see how others perceived a work...and I don't want to take the time to be the fifth person to say "Please check your spelling in line four)-- (LOL)
It's a member-dollar-driven site, for sure. I agree it's important to promote, to reciprocate, and to enter contests if that's your thing...
Thanks for jumping in with great advice!

Thank you Karenina. I appreciate the review and comments. I left out the best part. If the new writer can make it a couple of weeks without giving up, they are bound to meet some really neat people.
