I think sometimes that all of us feel like that proverbial doll on a shelf, particularly as one ages, it can seem like only the dust on one's clothes makes one visible, this is beautifully written my friend, an excellent post, beautifully written blessings Roy

If this was only about a doll, people are fading the same way for their family and friends: "I did not know that getting older,
would be like dying young.
People don't want a broken doll,
when all they see is songs unsung.
Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

Thank you for your feedback! Yes, I definitely wanted to use the doll as a metaphor to express the feelings of people in real life - really anyone who feels unwanted, unseen or broken. I?m glad you enjoyed it! Good luck with your writings too!

This is very interesting and I can relate to some of your analogies here. This is well written and thought provoking. Readers will engage with their own feelings of growing older, I'm sure. This leads one to reflect on life, generally. I enjoyed the imagery and colorful descriptions as well.
Best wishes,
Alex

This is an excellent poem that's very moving. I like the metaphoric use of the doll on the shelf for eldest daughters who many times feel forgotten, unseen, and unheard. This is so sad, and you've expressed this sad reality in moving and beautiful manner. I wish all parents would be able to read this and reflect!

The line that caught me:
I did not know that getting older,
would be like dying young.
As I navigate late middle age, I think often about how I was young not very long ago, and yet a really long time ago. Time is such a strange thing. I know your poem is about more than that, but that's what really struck me in an overwhelming sense because it is my experience at this time of life! Thanks so much for sharing. Julie

Your free verse poem is good about the way people look at older people.
As they say "A time live and a time to die." It is hard for people to believe that one is no longer functioning as he or she once did.
Good luck in the contest.
